Robert (VW Kidd) Velis & The Untold History of LA Cal Style Ep83

In Episode 83 of DubLife Diaries, we sit down with Robert "VW Kidd" Velis for a deep dive into the history, people, and culture behind the LA Cal Style Volkswagen scene.

Growing up in East Los Angeles in the 1970s, Robert was surrounded by some of the most influential lowrider clubs and custom car builders in Southern California. From the Dukes and Brown Breed to the Majestics and Imperials, car culture was part of everyday life. Those early influences would eventually collide with his love of Volkswagen and help shape a style that would spread far beyond Los Angeles.

Robert takes us back to the early days of the Bugs Buddies and the Volkswagen builds that helped establish what would eventually become known as Cal Style. We talk about slammed Beetles and Karmann Ghias, polished alloy wheels, European-spec parts, extreme stances, performance engines, and the influence that traditional lowrider culture had on these early Volkswagen builds.

But this episode goes much deeper than the cars.

Robert shares stories about visiting Vintage Volkswagen Parts Inc., learning from people like Rene Redlos of the Dukes, discovering the Volkswagen scene as a teenager, and watching the culture evolve from something happening in neighborhoods around LA into a worldwide movement.

We also get into the history behind the name "Cal Style," how the term became widely used around 1985, the later "Resto Cal" label, and why Robert believes much of the original history and the people behind it have been misunderstood or forgotten.

Robert's story also takes us through his decades in the automotive industry, his career with Mercedes-Benz, his involvement with the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America, his work preserving Volkswagen history, and his commitment to giving back to the car community.

This conversation was so packed with history that we actually had to hit pause when technical issues cut our recording short. Then 2 weeks later we picked back up and continued the conversation.

Every VW has a story. These are the people behind them.

[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to Dublife Diaries.

00:42.523 --> 00:49.830
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, what if I told you that one of the most popular ways to build a vintage Volkswagen today, didn't start on Instagram.

00:50.030 --> 00:51.572
[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't start at a VW show.

00:52.272 --> 00:55.215
[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't start in some German engineering department.

00:55.235 --> 00:56.015
[SPEAKER_01]: You know where it started?

00:56.656 --> 00:58.436
[SPEAKER_01]: It started in the streets of Los Angeles.

00:58.737 --> 01:02.998
[SPEAKER_01]: And the man soon across from me today was there when all this was happening.

01:03.018 --> 01:13.721
[SPEAKER_01]: So before Cal style became a worldwide Volkswagen movement, Robert VWKib was growing up surrounded by two completely different worlds that would eventually collide.

01:13.821 --> 01:18.302
[SPEAKER_01]: Vintage Volkswagen's and the legendary Los Angeles low-router culture.

01:19.042 --> 01:29.570
[SPEAKER_01]: his family has some very deep roots and some of the most historic low-router clubs in the world including the dukes which is a club that dates all the way back to 1958.

01:29.850 --> 01:32.852
[SPEAKER_01]: This guy has watched the low-router scene evolve.

01:32.872 --> 01:35.093
[SPEAKER_01]: He's watched the Volkswagen scene evolved.

01:35.214 --> 01:38.116
[SPEAKER_01]: He started putting those worlds together slamming Volkswagen's

01:38.796 --> 01:50.183
[SPEAKER_01]: Keep in the Chrome, add in the polished wheels, take in the inspiration from the low-rotter style and creating something that people today now recognize as the LA Cal style.

01:50.884 --> 01:51.884
[SPEAKER_01]: But here's the crazy part.

01:52.545 --> 01:56.267
[SPEAKER_01]: Decades later, that style has now spread around the world.

01:56.567 --> 01:56.948
[SPEAKER_01]: Japan?

01:57.708 --> 02:04.251
[SPEAKER_01]: Europe, Mexico, South America, and virtually every single corner of the Volkswagen culture.

02:04.371 --> 02:14.136
[SPEAKER_01]: People are building cars today that are directly influenced by something that started with a handful of guys just cruising Volkswagen's through the streets of Los Angeles decades ago.

02:14.276 --> 02:15.976
[SPEAKER_01]: So who actually created Cal Style?

02:16.117 --> 02:16.997
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about it.

02:17.197 --> 02:19.980
[SPEAKER_01]: Who did all these original cars originally come from?

02:20.180 --> 02:21.141
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about it.

02:21.501 --> 02:23.603
[SPEAKER_01]: Where did the low rider influence come from?

02:23.844 --> 02:24.745
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about it.

02:25.045 --> 02:26.987
[SPEAKER_01]: What was it like being there from the beginning?

02:27.427 --> 02:32.953
[SPEAKER_01]: Somebody that knew that before this was even becoming history, and what does a guy who lived this think?

02:33.473 --> 02:38.658
[SPEAKER_01]: When people still talk about the cow style in Volkswagen's today, we're going to hear all about it.

02:39.279 --> 02:44.921
[SPEAKER_01]: Today we're going back to the streets of Los Angeles to hear the story from somebody who didn't just read about it.

02:45.401 --> 02:46.022
[SPEAKER_01]: He lived it.

02:46.482 --> 02:48.342
[SPEAKER_01]: His name is Robert VW Kid.

02:48.362 --> 02:54.045
[SPEAKER_01]: He's the president and chairman of the vintage Volkswagen Club of America, Los Angeles region.

02:54.585 --> 02:56.245
[SPEAKER_01]: So happy to have you on the show today, man.

02:56.285 --> 02:57.486
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for coming on.

05:43.207 --> 05:45.588
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, how cool is that?

05:45.788 --> 05:47.229

[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get back to you, man.

05:50.950 --> 05:58.273
[SPEAKER_01]: You've been involved in Volkswagen's for decades, or the president and chairman of the vintage Volkswagen Club of America, Los Angeles region.

05:58.813 --> 06:02.955
[SPEAKER_01]: Your name is permanently connected now to the origins of LA Cow style.

06:03.455 --> 06:05.816
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk a little bit about Robert VW kid.

06:06.436 --> 06:11.918
[SPEAKER_01]: What do you want people to understand about who you are and what you've contributed to the Volkswagen world?

06:12.258 --> 06:22.644
[SPEAKER_00]: I think first and foremost, I want them to know that everything I do, everything I do in the vintage world, it's not for myself.

06:23.304 --> 06:39.673
[SPEAKER_00]: I do everything to better our culture, to better the community, and also that I go way back and I have a lot of knowledge because I lived it firsthand,

06:42.043 --> 06:43.585
[SPEAKER_00]: I was hearing about that knowledge.

06:43.765 --> 06:53.538
[SPEAKER_01]: Now you've said and even in your backstory that you sent to me that your history goes so deep that it's too deep just for some simple, you know, bio.

06:53.598 --> 06:55.000
[SPEAKER_01]: When I told you send me your bio.

06:55.501 --> 06:58.305
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, where does this story actually begin for you?

06:58.665 --> 07:03.767
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I always had our fascination of cars, the hot wheels, you know, little hot wheels playing.

07:04.308 --> 07:05.688
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I'll tell a story.

07:06.028 --> 07:10.070
[SPEAKER_00]: My mother during the Christmas season, she worked for my tell in hot learning.

07:10.611 --> 07:14.552
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, so every day, yeah, during the holiday season, she worked there.

07:15.173 --> 07:22.236
[SPEAKER_00]: So, she would bring home hot wheels for me and I would play from, you know, I must have been like four, five, six years old, right?

07:22.696 --> 07:24.097
[SPEAKER_00]: And then one day she brought me a little

07:25.247 --> 07:33.549
[SPEAKER_00]: Volkswagen Beetle, a little larger metal Volkswagen Beetle, and I thought that was such a cool car, right?

07:34.209 --> 07:40.751
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I had an early love for the Volkswagen, and another thing I'm an avid reader.

07:41.351 --> 07:46.452
[SPEAKER_00]: So when I got a little older, I started reading a lot about the Volkswagen.

07:47.019 --> 08:07.583
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I, I read about the, the campaign that don't burn about the campaign and think small all that when I was like nine 10 to 11 years old, the story of Volkswagen, um, but it was really, did it for me was, so I have a family in, in highland park, which is the Northeast part of Los Angeles.

08:08.023 --> 08:14.365
[SPEAKER_00]: So to get to that city or that area of Los Angeles, you have to go down Florence Avenue, which is the main street

08:17.445 --> 08:19.967
[SPEAKER_00]: to the west side of Malay all the way to the east side of Malay.

08:19.987 --> 08:21.728
[SPEAKER_00]: You got the cast of freeway.

08:21.828 --> 08:28.554
[SPEAKER_00]: So I would pass this service center or this repair shop, and it was called Rob Buggie House.

08:29.354 --> 08:38.842
[SPEAKER_00]: And this was owned by Steve Timbs, the famous drag racer that race in the 70s, any chara, award winning.

08:39.646 --> 08:42.588
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a gear at the time I didn't know it was a Carmen gear.

08:42.848 --> 08:48.771
[SPEAKER_00]: All I know, I was building little model cars and they come with little race cars, they come with stickers of sponsors.

08:49.671 --> 08:55.975
[SPEAKER_00]: I just saw a lot of stickers on this brown and light brown interesting car.

08:56.015 --> 08:58.016
[SPEAKER_00]: I knew it was a gray car.

08:58.696 --> 08:59.797
[SPEAKER_00]: So that picked my entry.

09:01.235 --> 09:13.569
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the first time at every drove in a Volkswagen, my older cousin, she had a boyfriend at the time, and he was in a California look club from the San Gabriel Valley.

09:14.690 --> 09:16.091
[SPEAKER_00]: They were called the proud Californians.

09:16.828 --> 09:24.334
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, a traditional California look, one piece window of the chrome center lines, you know, 1776, all the good stuff for the time.

09:25.095 --> 09:30.940
[SPEAKER_00]: It took me for a ride, you know, it's pretty quick, you know, I, you know, I got wow, this is quick for a bulk four cylinder.

09:31.961 --> 09:33.202
[SPEAKER_00]: So that hooked me right there.

09:34.423 --> 09:39.327
[SPEAKER_00]: But during this time, I was growing up with, you know, the low rider culture.

09:41.509 --> 09:43.110
[SPEAKER_00]: I grew up on flowing salamita,

09:44.992 --> 09:49.277
[SPEAKER_00]: the borderline of Honey and Park and South Central, the call to Florence Graeme, Maria.

09:50.218 --> 09:54.764
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I had all the cousins that live in the next start of me.

09:56.646 --> 09:59.269
[SPEAKER_00]: My cousin, he had a low rider.

10:00.210 --> 10:01.752
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was in a club called the Brown Bridge.

10:04.713 --> 10:11.915
[SPEAKER_00]: And in my city of Hunter Park, there was a pioneering hydraulic shop called Fickless Bill and Dix.

10:12.195 --> 10:14.695
[SPEAKER_00]: It was off behind Pacific.

10:14.835 --> 10:20.497
[SPEAKER_00]: There were there to, I believe, like the early 70s, maybe the late 60s, but shop was still there.

10:21.157 --> 10:28.439
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, nine, 10 years old, seeing hydraulic lifted cars and like, I wanna say, 74, 75, 75, right?

10:34.162 --> 10:43.447
[SPEAKER_00]: Lowered his shops are in Southern Cal, you know, like the Paris brothers were customised, but they were in the end with that one time before they were in North Hollywood.

10:44.608 --> 10:47.450
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I was a big car, park car person.

10:48.230 --> 10:56.595
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, my dad at the time was working in one of part for vans markets, that's a one-up park, uh, refrigerated warehouse.

10:57.840 --> 11:01.742
[SPEAKER_00]: And this in the 70s skateboarding was a big thing, right?

11:02.322 --> 11:05.324
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a big part to build all around Southern California, yes.

11:05.524 --> 11:08.585
[SPEAKER_00]: So those are just one skate park called Skate Topia in Burn Apart.

11:09.485 --> 11:11.466
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I used to skateboard as a kid.

11:12.147 --> 11:12.607
[SPEAKER_00]: And, um,

11:13.640 --> 11:17.642
[SPEAKER_00]: So my mom would go and pick up my dad and wait for my dad, we only had one car.

11:18.362 --> 11:24.304
[SPEAKER_00]: And so she would drop me off at the time, because it's a place called Cars of Stars in Glen of Heart.

11:24.444 --> 11:26.945
[SPEAKER_00]: And all the various customs are there.

11:27.025 --> 11:32.047
[SPEAKER_00]: The monster cars, anything that George Barris built, it was there.

11:33.608 --> 11:42.212
[SPEAKER_00]: I love the Eddie Monsters Radiron bicycle because I, you know, the lower, it just reminded me of the lower rider bicycles which I was building also at that time

11:44.780 --> 11:49.864
[SPEAKER_00]: And the interesting fact was I used to read the signs, you know, the storyboards for each car.

11:50.424 --> 11:55.628
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the bottom was Ed Roth on the bottom, who is everybody knows Ed Roth, right?

11:55.648 --> 11:59.631
[SPEAKER_00]: His shop was too cities away from me in Maywood on Office Lawson.

11:59.691 --> 12:03.474
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was surrounded with the car culture down.

12:03.794 --> 12:08.958
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was like my love, that's why I really got into cars.

12:09.344 --> 12:29.498
[SPEAKER_00]: So what age then were you I guess when when Volkswagen's I guess really kind of entered your life your life no, I would say, you know, I would say about 79 when actually that guy with able to tangibly see an actual Volkswagen, you know, because

12:31.805 --> 12:52.041
[SPEAKER_00]: The youngest brother of the well-realized family who was the founders of the Duke's Car Club, Renee, you know, he used a little older than me, but he was into Volkswagen's, you know, in the late 70s, early 80s, there was a transition, I would say, from the traditional

13:01.868 --> 13:11.932
[SPEAKER_00]: one of the first ones that I see personally take a genuine Porsche alloy and have it fully polished on a Lord formidable gear.

13:12.732 --> 13:24.137
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, now, more in context, there was another club, well, at the time it wasn't really a club, it was more like a syndicate, more like just a group of guys.

13:24.277 --> 13:24.717
[SPEAKER_00]: It was called the

13:30.243 --> 13:36.126
[SPEAKER_00]: Eddie Boyd add on to cone and all these guys, they were from luck went there.

13:36.846 --> 13:46.992
[SPEAKER_00]: But at that time in LA, this is the transition from bands to DJs, like mobile DJs, right?

13:47.552 --> 13:53.595
[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a lot of clubs in LA that were 18 and older.

13:54.296 --> 13:58.358
[SPEAKER_00]: But back then, they didn't really cards, but the bugs buddies were the ones that,

13:59.366 --> 14:03.629
[SPEAKER_00]: We're kind of synonymous with that LADJ seed.

14:04.550 --> 14:13.837
[SPEAKER_00]: And so the first time I saw them was at a club called Genos and Hollywood West Hollywood, actually, and all their cars were just slam.

14:14.739 --> 14:17.420
[SPEAKER_00]: either with smoothies or allies.

14:17.820 --> 14:22.322
[SPEAKER_00]: And now, allies were just barely hitting the scene because they're still a new wheel, right?

14:23.162 --> 14:31.486
[SPEAKER_00]: I know the catalog guys were taking late sixes that were still energized, a factory finish and putting them on their California lip cards.

14:32.522 --> 14:46.753
[SPEAKER_00]: but we were actually taking them and either polishing them, polishing promels and really that back then on the alloys, the German folks kind of perfected that with the chrome rare night-01 foots.

14:47.474 --> 14:48.454
[SPEAKER_00]: Polished at alloys,

14:49.295 --> 14:54.139
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's kind of like the first time I really saw, like I wanted to do this.

14:54.879 --> 14:57.822
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like 14, 15, 14.

14:58.723 --> 15:02.245
[SPEAKER_00]: And I started buying parts with my Volkswagen, that I didn't even have yet.

15:03.166 --> 15:07.209
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I, there was a company every year would have a big sale.

15:07.269 --> 15:07.870
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was,

15:09.347 --> 15:10.487
[SPEAKER_00]: That's beyond I think.

15:10.787 --> 15:14.308
[SPEAKER_00]: So I bought a back then you would get genuine books, so I can parse, right?

15:15.088 --> 15:20.909
[SPEAKER_00]: And the last set of hookcapped NLS said running boards and NLS set of European tail lights.

15:21.589 --> 15:24.750
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I wanted it to be whatever folks were going to had.

15:24.790 --> 15:27.991
[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to be having your rules back.

15:28.851 --> 15:35.192
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's how it like the, when it all started for me, seeing the bugs buddies.

15:36.493 --> 15:47.126
[SPEAKER_00]: We're in a, we're kind of meant to me in the Volkswagen world, sing him with his his cars and all his brothers with all the, you know, the do's car club with all their bombs.

15:47.827 --> 15:52.253
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the view is and and all the their fleet lines and all that.

15:52.777 --> 16:20.965
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to, I'm going to name drop some other other clubs because you had talked about these clubs in, in, in your backstory, but, you know, you grew up around clubs like you've mentioned the dukes, the majestic, the brown breed, is it, is it swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap, swap

16:21.305 --> 16:21.505
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

16:21.945 --> 16:28.947
[SPEAKER_01]: So tell me what those clubs represented in your neighborhood, you know, growing up as a kid.

16:29.147 --> 16:29.467
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

16:29.487 --> 16:35.489
[SPEAKER_00]: So the Southeast and East LA, like, you would see low riders, like, just daily, right?

16:36.029 --> 16:38.629
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the custom cars I was exposed to.

16:39.470 --> 16:42.150
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there was some muscle cars like a few were in South Gate.

16:42.170 --> 16:43.150
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a time

16:45.835 --> 16:50.298
[SPEAKER_00]: the majestic were a club that was from South Central.

16:51.059 --> 17:01.246
[SPEAKER_00]: And my old cousin, you know, I told you he was a low rider, he was a knack club, and the president of that club, his sister-in-law was going out with my cousin.

17:01.906 --> 17:05.108
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was seeing that club, right?

17:05.569 --> 17:11.553
[SPEAKER_00]: Knackles back to, when I eventually got my first Volkswagen, I wanted to find a particular Volkswagen.

17:11.833 --> 17:14.735
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know much about them, the details, years, and all that.

17:15.135 --> 17:24.570
[SPEAKER_00]: All I knew was I wanted a white with the red interior because the president of brown breed had a a six to two Apollo fucking vertebo with white with the red interior.

17:25.211 --> 17:26.232
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's what I wanted.

17:26.873 --> 17:28.215
[SPEAKER_00]: Come to find out later on.

17:29.257 --> 17:29.778
[SPEAKER_00]: This is like

17:30.708 --> 17:49.239
[SPEAKER_00]: When I came back to the scene really heavy that that was a pagali that I didn't know that that that was a rare one year only 66 combination pagali some roof so yeah that that was that was that and then going back to Look the the majestic had a hunting supporter chapter and a friend of mine.

17:51.407 --> 18:09.678
[SPEAKER_00]: actually two people I know were in logistics, my wife, my wife, my wife, her sister was married to one of the members, they're no longer married, but they remember that was her brother-in-law.

18:09.718 --> 18:15.141
[SPEAKER_00]: He was in the logistics and Malvin was the president of the logistics, he had a real clean

18:21.401 --> 18:26.188
[SPEAKER_00]: Pacific Boulevard is the main thoroughfare in Huntington Park shopping and all that.

18:26.208 --> 18:27.710
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the way before a malls, right?

18:27.730 --> 18:28.791
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a wheelchair Boulevard.

18:29.372 --> 18:33.237
[SPEAKER_00]: So there were cruisers and there were cruisers in the 70s.

18:33.518 --> 18:36.822
[SPEAKER_00]: And I would just write my bicycle over there and watch all the little writers, you know?

18:37.483 --> 18:48.330
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's where I would see the Imperials and, you know, the course of Duke's, and then the old memories which were part of Duke's and they kind of branched off.

18:48.370 --> 18:53.374
[SPEAKER_00]: I think this happened around 84-85, same cars that style.

18:54.254 --> 19:02.900
[SPEAKER_00]: But what really, with our lower outer clubs was, I had older sisters and, you know, there were going out with the guys.

19:03.160 --> 19:05.101
[SPEAKER_00]: But one sister was into the muscle cars,

19:06.632 --> 19:30.532
[SPEAKER_00]: a guy that was a muscle car guy and the other wasn't so low right is so uh yeah so um you got I was the one in the world yeah yeah so with your boulevard is a iconic cruising spot in Los Angeles and East Calac right so uh I was younger than my older sister so my mom would say if you're going to go oh go you have to take your little brother you know that kind of thing

19:31.252 --> 19:42.455
[SPEAKER_00]: So I would be in the back seat, watching all of the lower adder happenings that were near Boulevard, or at least in part, when I was like 13, 14 years old, right?

19:43.055 --> 19:58.480
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I saw all the colorful cars, you know, during the 70s, all of the lower adders were like candy flakes and pearls, like the column, multi-graphic, all that, you know, lifestyle, car club, and perials, you know, all of those cars,

20:00.913 --> 20:05.358
[SPEAKER_00]: group, which is another 12, that goes way back in East LA.

20:05.858 --> 20:17.611
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm seeing these as a 13, 14 year old, and then I'm going to all the shows, the little right of it, super shows, at the LA Sports Arena, which is a little longer there.

20:17.671 --> 20:20.534
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it's a soccer, our LA soccer team is a stadium, but.

20:21.338 --> 20:27.263
[SPEAKER_00]: I was going there seeing all these cars when low-right is run over it's history, full displays, all mirrors.

20:27.924 --> 20:30.867
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was my early influences, you know, I mean, damn.

20:31.687 --> 20:32.048
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

20:32.548 --> 20:39.955
[SPEAKER_00]: And I know, you told me, like, do you, you were in the 90s, you were into the low-right or, you know, things like that.

20:40.015 --> 20:45.820
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, that's why, you know, we connected earlier and I created it a little conversation.

20:46.555 --> 20:46.775
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

20:47.356 --> 20:53.542
[SPEAKER_01]: So, so my brothers, you know, similar to you, uh, I was the youngest in my, my family.

20:53.562 --> 20:56.765
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I had a younger sister, but she didn't actually grow up in our household.

20:57.445 --> 21:00.728
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so in my, under my roof, I was the youngest.

21:00.828 --> 21:02.990
[SPEAKER_01]: I had older brothers and all of their friends.

21:03.751 --> 21:10.734
[SPEAKER_01]: and their friends used to be like, oh man, you know, bring your little brother, you know, so I would go, you know, probably, you know, like you.

21:10.834 --> 21:11.714
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd go around stuff.

21:11.754 --> 21:15.216
[SPEAKER_01]: I had no business being around at the age I was at.

21:15.556 --> 21:16.556
[SPEAKER_01]: But I did.

21:16.696 --> 21:23.039
[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't fluent heavily by, you know, the mini truck and was a big, you know, big scene for us West Coast Central Florida here.

21:23.759 --> 21:34.956
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, in the in the late 80s early 90s, you know, they had trucks with the hydraulics and, you know, they were, you know, the beds could lift off and dance and spin and all this crazy stuff.

21:34.996 --> 21:35.497
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

21:35.557 --> 21:35.777
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

21:36.037 --> 21:36.598
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

21:37.059 --> 21:37.720
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know,

21:38.681 --> 21:45.382
[SPEAKER_01]: It was, when you were just telling about, you know, your, your backstory about, you know, kind of, you know, tagging along if you will.

21:45.842 --> 21:48.963
[SPEAKER_01]: It did really just brought me back to my youth, my childhood, man.

21:48.983 --> 22:00.965
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I used to, my brothers were into the show cars and they had show trucks and, you know, they were, you know, four, 15 inch subwoofers and then the other guy would have eight, 15s and his bed and it would get up and down.

22:00.985 --> 22:03.526
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, I remember that 90s era.

22:03.926 --> 22:14.033
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, all the hot colors and the, you know, the, I think that's old and candy and this and that and, you know, so yeah, man, it totally brings me back to, to my youth.

22:14.073 --> 22:16.074
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's refreshing to talk about that.

22:16.094 --> 22:28.583
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm, I'm interested to hear from you, how did you make the transition, I guess, eventually from that, that being that heavy in the lower out our culture into Volkswagen's.

22:29.497 --> 22:31.620
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, it's, it's pretty simple.

22:32.101 --> 22:42.958
[SPEAKER_00]: So in the 70s, in my neighborhood, when you saw a low rider, typically there, there were, there were associated with a certain kind of element back then.

22:43.841 --> 23:09.610
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and, and I would see the, I, I like county sheriffs, a notorious station, you know, the lingman sheriffs would be pulling over all the low riders and as a kid writing around on a bicycle, and we see all the, all the low rider guys sitting on the curb, but they're trunk open, and yeah, getting sweaty, we, we early on as kids, we are so man, we associated with like, well, that's not good, right?

23:10.370 --> 23:13.133
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, and I didn't grow up with much money.

23:13.273 --> 23:17.116
[SPEAKER_00]: I grew up in, you know, like I told you, 100-part sport-along South Central.

23:17.656 --> 23:21.640
[SPEAKER_00]: So, the Volkswagen's were like a affordable car, right?

23:22.080 --> 23:23.281
[SPEAKER_00]: There were cheap little cars.

23:24.863 --> 23:29.447
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I went to a high school that was,

23:30.824 --> 23:34.247
[SPEAKER_00]: Far from my community from plenty of particles in the city of Balfloher.

23:35.028 --> 23:36.669
[SPEAKER_00]: So early on, I got our card.

23:37.069 --> 23:40.292
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, back then you get a driver that I just got 15 and a half, right?

23:40.432 --> 23:43.275
[SPEAKER_00]: No one's sure this needed, right?

23:43.956 --> 23:50.521
[SPEAKER_00]: So my mom and my dad bought me a car, but now the Volkswagen, when I was about, just about to turn 15.

23:51.542 --> 24:02.630
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's when I I really started putting my hands on it, but going back to was that your first, your first, yeah, my 1966 Pugali Stunders.

24:02.810 --> 24:05.812
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, okay, for a while.

24:06.793 --> 24:13.218
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so so The trend that I haven't seen the transition was I got a bug.

24:14.138 --> 24:14.919
[SPEAKER_00]: It was affordable.

24:16.135 --> 24:30.961
[SPEAKER_00]: And I know I can afford, even though the policy and all that were still inexpensive back then, but I wasn't going to have that the brick car, you know, I need to get gas mileage 15, if I racked it, do license, you know.

24:31.662 --> 24:39.525
[SPEAKER_00]: So with my lower rider influence, the bunch buddies were already slamming cars, Renee, Red Loss was already slamming these cars.

24:40.673 --> 24:53.900
[SPEAKER_00]: So as soon as I got my pagali right away, I changed it to the URL spec, I put NLS URL pin bumpers, European lenses and you flew to European headlight assemblies, right?

24:55.200 --> 25:03.424
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, still it's, it was still the original paint and it still had the little overridered holes, but you know, that's what I wanted to do and then I

25:05.185 --> 25:06.706
[SPEAKER_00]: such a law in your back, everything had money.

25:06.746 --> 25:08.748
[SPEAKER_00]: So we would do it the old school way.

25:08.768 --> 25:12.391
[SPEAKER_00]: We would pull out the torsion bars right in the front, whatever you hold on with go.

25:12.971 --> 25:15.893
[SPEAKER_00]: My cars would be all the little ones.

25:17.194 --> 25:19.776
[SPEAKER_00]: One fat one from the top.

25:20.477 --> 25:23.519
[SPEAKER_00]: And then it would be Lord.

25:24.280 --> 25:26.261
[SPEAKER_00]: So I learned this from another good friend.

25:28.128 --> 25:32.729
[SPEAKER_00]: They're, again, the Lord cars are very starting.

25:32.769 --> 25:38.470
[SPEAKER_00]: Volkswagen is a very starting, you know, maybe a year or two before that, like really slam.

25:39.210 --> 25:49.012
[SPEAKER_00]: But so we follow the traditional Lord Rider bugs, like Swave and the Lady Buds, which is the all first Car Club ever, right?

25:49.632 --> 25:50.412
[SPEAKER_00]: All women.

25:51.272 --> 25:54.553
[SPEAKER_00]: And so besides being a bug club, right?

25:56.722 --> 25:57.683
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the way they would do it.

25:57.783 --> 26:01.208
[SPEAKER_00]: It would be counter the rear, spring plates, and they would pull out torsion bars.

26:01.568 --> 26:06.394
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of you use this, so that's a drop, but we didn't have money for wilding and taking it to a shop to do that, right?

26:06.494 --> 26:07.736
[SPEAKER_00]: It was old school method.

26:09.047 --> 26:18.435
[SPEAKER_00]: So I want my card to be extremely low because seeing the low rider is like on display at the LA sports arena like them.

26:18.555 --> 26:22.478
[SPEAKER_00]: Periods have such a cool lineup and they're all really, really low.

26:22.758 --> 26:24.820
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what I want to do with my Volkswagen's.

26:25.540 --> 26:30.484
[SPEAKER_00]: And with the Duke's influence,

26:34.272 --> 27:00.567
[SPEAKER_00]: kind of reminded me of a little bumpy thought would be called like a little bug right because of some of the bombs are shaped you know like like especially the fleas lines and the late 40s so that was the thing and um what's with my influence of her name is again from the dudes he was if he had a Lord Gia and he had a big motor really fast built gearbox from people like Steve Tim's going back to his shot real buggy house

27:01.643 --> 27:05.086
[SPEAKER_00]: And he had a day folds who still building gearboxes today.

27:05.106 --> 27:09.950
[SPEAKER_00]: He had a gearbox and we're a quick gear.

27:10.831 --> 27:14.634
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the reason why we've gotten to Volkswagen.

27:16.335 --> 27:17.897
[SPEAKER_00]: And another thing too is,

27:18.839 --> 27:22.821
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the teen sane in LA, everybody's cruising all the high schools.

27:22.921 --> 27:32.726
[SPEAKER_00]: There was no phone, so we would have flyer parties, pass out flyers, choose different high schools, passing out flyers for house parties or meetups.

27:33.326 --> 27:34.507
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so that's what we did.

27:35.307 --> 28:03.015
[SPEAKER_00]: And we were building cars, I was building my bugs to meet people, meet girls and all that kind of stuff just, you know, yeah, I didn't think at the time what I did back then with my group of friends like the bugs buddies and Renee that if it would be a style that's worldwide today, you know, I didn't we that that was just doing what wanted to do so we're going to we're going to talk about that now, I think it's a it's a perfect time to talk about it.

28:04.219 --> 28:08.321
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the birth of the L.A. Cal style.

28:08.381 --> 28:12.423
[SPEAKER_01]: So where did the L.A. Cal style actually come from?

28:12.663 --> 28:13.423
[SPEAKER_01]: The birth of it?

28:14.764 --> 28:19.626
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so the term Cal style didn't, it's good to go back.

28:20.027 --> 28:22.208
[SPEAKER_00]: So in A, when college, you got to style.

28:22.708 --> 28:30.892
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, all the original cars because the Impala's in all those back in the 70s, especially from the period.

28:31.692 --> 28:34.514
[SPEAKER_00]: They kept all the, they just, they just, we're accessories, right?

28:34.574 --> 28:39.539
[SPEAKER_00]: Even in the bomb, from the doots, you had accessories, factory accessories on them, right?

28:39.939 --> 28:46.144
[SPEAKER_00]: So Renee would call his cars our Chicano style, you know?

28:46.344 --> 28:51.288
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I have a, a deep history in Chicano, like, Chicano studies and all that too.

28:51.749 --> 28:52.730
[SPEAKER_00]: I studied him in, in, in,

28:53.590 --> 28:56.311
[SPEAKER_00]: college, but that's a whole other podcast.

28:56.651 --> 29:13.037
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah yeah so and then I would I personally called it vintage style because we talked earlier in the show of the the the the the first after market of not I'm sorry not after market first restoration parthouse

29:13.677 --> 29:32.580
[SPEAKER_00]: in the United States, which is Vincent's Volkswagen Parts Inc., and it was right near Dodgers Stadium on San Fernando, and the gentleman that had that was Bob Scott, who was a professor at Blindell Community College, but he would go to Germany and Europe and get all these endless parts for Volkswagen and all that.

29:33.021 --> 29:39.982
[SPEAKER_00]: This is when people were what split windows and sort of like the stuff you see

29:41.442 --> 29:47.290
[SPEAKER_00]: that convert our HL today, you know, all original cars, had Mueller's and spit, spit windows.

29:47.871 --> 29:57.123
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a natural thing for us in relating to the low rider community with their NOS parts, for their impoll us, with their shepherds, for their bombs.

29:59.142 --> 30:13.524
[SPEAKER_00]: that we would go to Vinnie's Volkswagen Parts Inc. And there was one person that worked there, his name is Jaime Lopez, he comes from a low-rider background now, about two also, and he was good friends with Renee and the Rela's family.

30:14.225 --> 30:16.925
[SPEAKER_00]: And today he works for Bob Pach.

30:17.265 --> 30:21.686
[SPEAKER_00]: He's his right hand man at Bob Pach, which is from both back.

30:22.526 --> 30:27.847
[SPEAKER_00]: We saw him Volkswagen and in fact, his wife's car is on the last issue of Hot VW's.

30:28.487 --> 30:30.268
[SPEAKER_00]: the blue convertible gear.

30:30.568 --> 30:44.937
[SPEAKER_00]: So we would go there and buy our like you can buy like if you had a turquoise turquoise 62 rag top 6 when rag top we could still buy endless running board match all that good stuff.

30:45.738 --> 30:52.542
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know I had a friend back then who he said one time you know

30:55.767 --> 30:57.988
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't shave the crown, we save the crown.

30:58.328 --> 31:12.056
[SPEAKER_00]: And that was a little model, all the original of the crown and trim because, you know, the word, so after a vintage Volkswagen Part C, and Mike termed the vintage style for that,

31:12.716 --> 31:15.677
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I had people would come up to my car and say, man, what's wrong with it?

31:15.697 --> 31:20.718
[SPEAKER_00]: Because the real extreme negative camper and how low it was, nobody was doing that.

31:20.998 --> 31:23.039
[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody was doing that at the time.

31:23.079 --> 31:26.720
[SPEAKER_00]: And besides in our little east side area of Los Angeles, right?

31:27.180 --> 31:29.861
[SPEAKER_00]: Although Latinos were doing that.

31:30.201 --> 31:37.803
[SPEAKER_00]: And they would see the stock mirrors I had right hand drive, 101 mirror, nobody was doing that.

31:37.823 --> 31:41.964
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's going to baby turbos, tornadoes, and all that kind of aftermarket stuff.

31:42.727 --> 31:43.808
[SPEAKER_00]: you know.

31:44.508 --> 31:50.871
[SPEAKER_00]: So my cars stood out and the bugs by these cars stood out when you're used cars stood out for the time.

31:52.532 --> 32:00.196
[SPEAKER_00]: So in the street, about 8485, it started spreading whiter and the greater LA area.

32:01.176 --> 32:03.117
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's about style.

32:05.208 --> 32:07.450
[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to make sure I'm following you here.

32:07.510 --> 32:13.935
[SPEAKER_01]: So at that time, it really, like you said, there was only a, a, your car and maybe a couple other cars.

32:13.975 --> 32:17.698
[SPEAKER_01]: So at that time, it's, it was kind of referred to as Chicano style.

32:18.398 --> 32:24.823
[SPEAKER_01]: So it wasn't, it wasn't a name that stuck or it wasn't a cow style yet, right?

32:24.863 --> 32:29.006
[SPEAKER_01]: That's, so I guess when did, you said it started to spread out.

32:29.847 --> 32:32.309
[SPEAKER_01]: When did that name, the Cal style?

32:32.329 --> 32:33.890
[SPEAKER_01]: When did that actually stick?

32:34.331 --> 32:39.375
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there was another term that was called Cal Bud.

32:39.995 --> 32:40.236
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

32:40.316 --> 32:49.223
[SPEAKER_00]: It was kind of a cross of a Cal looker and a Cal style card because they would have aftermarket mirrors, maybe have one piece of windows.

32:49.884 --> 32:50.444
[SPEAKER_00]: Someone have

32:51.864 --> 32:55.347
[SPEAKER_00]: the molding still, but it was still that final influence.

32:55.767 --> 32:57.469
[SPEAKER_00]: They still had the blinged out wheels, either.

32:58.009 --> 33:02.273
[SPEAKER_00]: Policed Facebook MPs, Policed Out Boys, Polish Center lines.

33:03.134 --> 33:12.982
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a cowbug, but me and my group of guys, bugs buddies were named from the Dudes.

33:14.762 --> 33:33.352
[SPEAKER_00]: We started using the Calstown and started going spreading because we would cruise with your boulevard, you know, and the term just stuck, you know, it's a style, you know, it wasn't like we wanted to blink in our cars, you know, polish wheels, just like the low riders.

33:34.353 --> 33:39.115
[SPEAKER_00]: So I would say it was adopted probably universally about 85

33:48.142 --> 33:54.367
[SPEAKER_00]: the Cal style mini truck, you know, and they got low-ratter influence, mini truck of Los Angeles, he says a Los Angeles.

33:54.868 --> 33:56.009
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

33:56.049 --> 34:04.516
[SPEAKER_01]: So in the big picture, like did you guys did you feel like was there even like a moment that you realized like holy shit where we're on to something here?

34:04.596 --> 34:05.757
[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is spread now.

34:06.398 --> 34:10.321
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a whole bunch of people doing this now, like you kind of started it.

34:11.302 --> 34:12.603
[SPEAKER_00]: Not really, I'll tell you why.

34:13.223 --> 34:13.604
[SPEAKER_00]: Because,

34:14.886 --> 34:18.647
[SPEAKER_00]: Going back to, I went to a school in Balfour, called St. John Basso High School.

34:19.627 --> 34:26.308
[SPEAKER_00]: And at that time, there was not many two Latinos, too many Latinos, but I made a lot of good friends.

34:26.468 --> 34:33.070
[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of the friends were from a while-known California look club called DKK or their Clienter Complagans.

34:33.550 --> 34:35.230
[SPEAKER_00]: They were like the 80s Cala Club.

34:36.331 --> 34:40.751
[SPEAKER_00]: They're in my friends, they had magazine, pop it up, featured cars back then.

34:43.532 --> 34:52.027
[SPEAKER_00]: But these are all of my brothers today because, you know, same down Bosco, they only graduated very like 220 people a year.

34:52.608 --> 34:54.391
[SPEAKER_00]: So we still, I still can't touch them.

34:55.854 --> 35:03.237
[SPEAKER_00]: So when I would roll up to the high school man, they were like, they were counting me in a fun way, man.

35:03.257 --> 35:06.038
[SPEAKER_00]: They would call it that he's telling a beater bug.

35:06.078 --> 35:10.259
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was totally, you know, which is a bother me at all, right?

35:10.720 --> 35:16.782
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because doubt that was their style was a total Chicano, lower edder, him from style, right?

35:17.102 --> 35:23.684
[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, about 87 a term came out from someone

35:26.203 --> 35:35.886
[SPEAKER_00]: uh, it because our our LA style was getting farther out, you know, a couple of features and UW trends magazine, they've ventured into LA.

35:36.006 --> 35:41.748
[SPEAKER_00]: Half of the obvious at that time was more Orange County centric and more California looks centric.

35:42.748 --> 35:50.150
[SPEAKER_00]: Now they're they're they're moving away from that with an owners which which I really appreciate and and which I think is a great great thing.

35:50.564 --> 35:58.751
[SPEAKER_00]: because there's a whole big worldwide scene, you know, the new owner wants to touch on all that, all the different styles and genres of vintage Volkswagen's.

35:59.391 --> 36:06.537
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but at that time, it was very on its county's Cal Luxentric, and they didn't really venture into our site at town, you know.

36:07.778 --> 36:14.363
[SPEAKER_00]: So, there was an article that called it Resto Cal, or Restoration Cal, you know.

36:14.924 --> 36:17.466
[SPEAKER_00]: And now, we say, hey, we were during this in 1978,

36:21.087 --> 36:22.548
[SPEAKER_00]: And our cars were not being restored.

36:22.568 --> 36:26.410
[SPEAKER_00]: They were either still clean original cars that we just planned on alloys.

36:27.430 --> 36:36.815
[SPEAKER_00]: Or like my car, my car was like the first, even though it was real clean and original, my car was the first one that was completely taken apart and redone.

36:37.536 --> 36:38.896
[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't need a restoration.

36:38.916 --> 36:40.797
[SPEAKER_00]: I just wanted to make it so style.

36:41.238 --> 36:48.061
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I had to enter the guys, some of the best, the painter's, low rider painters painted my car.

36:50.463 --> 36:53.086
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of that does a lot of a low-writer interior is back then.

36:53.106 --> 36:54.727
[SPEAKER_00]: This is like in 82, right?

36:55.508 --> 36:56.830
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was my whole influence.

36:56.850 --> 37:02.695
[SPEAKER_00]: So I would obviously I would go to, you know, low-writers, a postory shop, right?

37:02.836 --> 37:05.278
[SPEAKER_00]: And I would go to, you know, painting, like,

37:08.123 --> 37:12.088
[SPEAKER_00]: bugs, all these different, well known, the writer painters.

37:12.648 --> 37:14.711
[SPEAKER_00]: So my car was taken apart, it was redone.

37:15.471 --> 37:24.581
[SPEAKER_00]: So I can show it like that to shows a Southgate, which I think it still goes on today, or like, any of the park high school had shows that the Duke's was sponsor.

37:25.362 --> 37:32.603
[SPEAKER_00]: and just cruising, cruising with your boulevard now that all the teen hotspots like ladies and men park, stadium weight.

37:33.243 --> 37:38.444
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it made my car distinct and everybody remembers it because of my license plate that's behind you in the background.

37:39.065 --> 37:40.365
[SPEAKER_00]: I had that plate since 1981.

37:40.525 --> 37:40.865
[SPEAKER_00]: No.

37:42.285 --> 37:49.026
[SPEAKER_00]: To go to the DMV and get a personalized plate back then, you have to go to a big old telephone book and look at the name was taken.

37:49.707 --> 37:52.187
[SPEAKER_01]: And then if it wasn't taken, you applied, right?

37:52.600 --> 38:12.016
[SPEAKER_00]: So what I want to do is circle back because there's somebody I need to mention, you know, you asked me what was like the first time you saw like, what's the book's buddies at genals, but the one person was, well, well, well, I'm the girl, which I know is Bill, and I don't know if you know his story, he, he just got out of San Quentin.

38:12.036 --> 38:13.377
[SPEAKER_00]: He was in there for 42 years.

38:14.038 --> 38:14.418
[SPEAKER_00]: Duke.

38:14.538 --> 38:18.862
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, when he went, when he was convicted, he was a sergeant of arms of our syndicate, the book's buddies.

38:21.793 --> 38:23.816
[SPEAKER_00]: He was the youngest in California, right?

38:24.517 --> 38:28.842
[SPEAKER_00]: Now he's on the talk show, he's an artist, he has a lot of green, he wrote books, all that.

38:29.142 --> 38:34.449
[SPEAKER_00]: He was on the first time he ever talked about books, so I can go down and build tea's podcast.

38:34.489 --> 38:35.170
[SPEAKER_00]: I made that happen.

38:35.190 --> 38:37.093
[SPEAKER_00]: He was still inside, he was calling from San Quitton.

38:37.733 --> 38:38.655
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's cool.

38:38.675 --> 38:39.596
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so...

38:41.017 --> 38:50.202
[SPEAKER_00]: We've talked because you know inside man they get phones and all that man to hold another world in there right sure Yeah, so we were talking maybe seven eight years before he got out.

38:50.262 --> 38:50.742
[SPEAKER_00]: He found me.

38:50.762 --> 38:56.766
[SPEAKER_00]: He knew everything You know, he has access to internet and everything in there And so he reached out, but his net.

38:56.806 --> 38:58.987
[SPEAKER_00]: He reached out as his nephew.

38:59.007 --> 39:02.889
[SPEAKER_00]: Did he the trust was there that he said, hey, this is a bill I'm like whoa

39:03.428 --> 39:05.188
[SPEAKER_00]: Because you know, we thought he was never going to come out.

39:05.568 --> 39:13.770
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why kind of the Bugs buddies died because like when he went away, this is December of when they finally picked them up of 1983.

39:14.110 --> 39:24.812
[SPEAKER_00]: So like by 84, the Bugs buddies kind of just, because we all scattered because, obviously there was a whole cast for some rally sheriff's trying to infiltrate us off because of him and all that craziness, right?

39:25.432 --> 39:30.833
[SPEAKER_00]: So we kind of just scattered, but then that's when Rubin, Navarro, the founder of German folks,

39:31.501 --> 39:32.782
[SPEAKER_00]: picked it up because you hung out with us.

39:33.363 --> 39:35.844
[SPEAKER_00]: So then, you know, you know, the best story about the German folks, right?

39:36.125 --> 39:39.708
[SPEAKER_00]: So like the German folks is the pure LA Loretta style.

39:40.448 --> 39:49.015
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like if you had aftermarket mirrors, week mirrors anything aftermarket, you won't consider the Loretta influence LA style card.

39:49.695 --> 39:50.916
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, people get caught up in a normal

39:53.238 --> 39:58.879
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, honestly, my, my family renamed Reddust from the Duke.

39:58.899 --> 40:00.180
[SPEAKER_00]: He called a Chicano style.

40:00.200 --> 40:07.161
[SPEAKER_00]: That's all he called, but, you know, as I've gotten spreading out, I used to call it vintage style because we were getting our parts from vintage Volkswagen parts.

40:07.781 --> 40:09.682
[SPEAKER_00]: Because nobody was doing that, really, man, nobody.

40:09.722 --> 40:11.462
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and you can see all my albums, right?

40:12.302 --> 40:16.003
[SPEAKER_00]: All of these challenge people I said, hey, because, you know, there's always those people like, well, you didn't start.

40:16.691 --> 40:45.991
[SPEAKER_00]: not here to happen in LA right okay I get it I get it but I go I always challenge anybody you show me a car like ours prior to 1994 up picture and then you know we could talk because you can see my car built in 81 had a convertible deck with pop-out windows I had NOS European bumpers because I wanted to go the European look because that's you know trying to be different European NOS how are the European lenses the headlights the fluid headlights nobody was doing

40:46.555 --> 40:46.975
[SPEAKER_00]: back then.

40:47.095 --> 40:50.316
[SPEAKER_00]: Now it's very common, you know, they're due to all day long.

40:50.516 --> 40:56.237
[SPEAKER_00]: But again, going back to Vinnie's Volkswagen parts by Dr. Stadium and Glendale, he was, he had all that stuff.

40:56.937 --> 40:58.497
[SPEAKER_00]: He had all the NLS parts.

40:59.077 --> 41:05.659
[SPEAKER_00]: So the only thing we went to, Johnny speeding chrome, small car space of the CE's, car crap, was for the engine parts, for the performance.

41:06.119 --> 41:08.159
[SPEAKER_00]: There's, you know, that, that's something else, you know.

41:10.459 --> 41:12.060
[SPEAKER_00]: But there's another club, two of mine, they just

41:13.601 --> 41:16.563
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a bunch of buddies at the same time, there was a vintage bolsters.

41:17.544 --> 41:26.831
[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys are still around now, they're kind of morphed into either arteries, lower areas, but their cars are completely stocked, stock engines, peace units, but just spam with smoothies.

41:27.512 --> 41:31.435
[SPEAKER_00]: And we were the ones that same thing, but we had aloeis and big motors.

41:32.296 --> 41:33.997
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what you're building everybody built today.

41:34.257 --> 41:36.299
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was a trash transition from malois.

41:36.359 --> 41:41.823
[SPEAKER_00]: Alas really got popular about 85 and six around there

41:43.787 --> 41:44.788
[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, Paul is.

41:44.808 --> 41:53.095
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not talking about the factory finance and advice, but, you know, you know, talk about how crazy that was for early 80s.

41:53.535 --> 42:05.044
[SPEAKER_00]: I think me, there's a few guys like Ray Mahia with VBK now and he, he had a car, a local car called Little Dreamer, and he was one of the ones that have a first set of 48 and like 81, 82.

42:06.723 --> 42:13.589
[SPEAKER_00]: I had got my first set of four days from 82 IDAs, but I had 44s and 40s on my, you know, learning out, you know, the budget, right?

42:14.410 --> 42:18.774
[SPEAKER_00]: And I used to run a magneto on the street for two things.

42:18.874 --> 42:30.745
[SPEAKER_00]: All the strict stuff that I learned from Dean Berg, books, deep tams, watching Rayman here because he was like the first cry, so I'll pop a willy on the street, you know.

42:31.324 --> 42:36.330
[SPEAKER_00]: like he would be at the party and the club saw he would be like launching line off launching.

42:36.370 --> 42:42.817
[SPEAKER_00]: This is like an 81-82, you know, and I finally built a car.

42:42.937 --> 42:47.702
[SPEAKER_00]: I duplicated his engine basically with them, but that time he started the police academy and he's like he was done with all that.

42:48.297 --> 43:13.845
[SPEAKER_00]: but he came back after he retired so yeah so back then there was very new combinations either you know 82 crank 69 crank 1835 2180 2110 right you know not you can do whatever you want but that was basically you know um the heads that were getting were from your full cry I had a set of from your full cry I he was originally had builder for MP Riverside of a tonic family right

43:17.430 --> 43:25.600
[SPEAKER_00]: I had like, you know, Steve Tams and Fumil, but I mean, two best ones, I had performance tickets.

43:25.680 --> 43:27.382
[SPEAKER_00]: I had a lot, I wasn't both your heads a lot.

43:27.402 --> 43:35.232
[SPEAKER_00]: We were all both your heads, you know, trying to find the right combo, you know, and they were all handcrafted, well, they're still back then, you know.

43:35.830 --> 43:44.979
[SPEAKER_00]: And we all ran merge, merge, dukes off, which we still run LSD guys, that I just posted Marco, which is 54 right-hand drive cabaret.

43:45.860 --> 43:47.681
[SPEAKER_00]: So original right-hand drive, very, very, right?

43:48.883 --> 43:53.367
[SPEAKER_00]: You look on it, he has an original Thunderbird NOS exhaust on it.

43:53.567 --> 43:56.189
[SPEAKER_00]: We still run him because that sound, I don't know if you ever heard that sound with the 48s.

43:57.184 --> 43:58.745
[SPEAKER_00]: tall manifold or start round of folds.

43:58.765 --> 44:00.406
[SPEAKER_00]: They just have that dress.

44:01.287 --> 44:05.009
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like I have an NOS 14 that I had since 14burg.

44:05.029 --> 44:08.792
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, we got in some performance mainly for street racing.

44:09.553 --> 44:13.796
[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, eventually like everybody started running big monitors and 48s.

44:14.676 --> 44:19.880
[SPEAKER_00]: And then when I was talking about 85 all the alloys and I go, I was always wanted to be different.

44:19.900 --> 44:20.660
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's when I bought

44:25.031 --> 44:26.251
[SPEAKER_00]: back then was a big workshop.

44:26.271 --> 44:29.713
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like the super shops of Volkswagen's in Ozusa, right?

44:30.513 --> 44:32.674
[SPEAKER_00]: They had a car lot and everything.

44:33.574 --> 44:36.115
[SPEAKER_00]: So eventually, they were already 20 years old.

44:36.275 --> 44:37.295
[SPEAKER_00]: They're brittle, right?

44:37.335 --> 44:38.456
[SPEAKER_00]: They're magnesium, right?

44:39.356 --> 44:42.077
[SPEAKER_00]: And I had mine on a slam 67 and broke it.

44:42.277 --> 44:42.677
[SPEAKER_00]: I broke it.

44:43.604 --> 44:46.466
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, so I put an ad in HotVivis, you can see the ad.

44:47.027 --> 44:49.388
[SPEAKER_00]: Fabian Duohar, he has, he's like the archiveist.

44:49.568 --> 44:53.151
[SPEAKER_00]: HotVivis placed an ad for one BRM to make the set again.

44:53.531 --> 44:57.374
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, a racer from Oklahoma had a pair with slicks.

44:58.095 --> 45:04.299
[SPEAKER_00]: So I bought him, so then I now I had four, five, but the broker one six.

45:05.000 --> 45:07.682
[SPEAKER_00]: That one, which Kimbo has made it a clock.

45:08.462 --> 45:09.523
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a clock, he still has it.

45:12.523 --> 45:16.966
[SPEAKER_00]: And those are the wheels not on Bill Swimmer's core red, rag top calico car.

45:17.547 --> 45:21.930
[SPEAKER_00]: So I had VRNs before he's somewhat even the calico cars.

45:23.031 --> 45:32.298
[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy because I learned about him, Gene Berg, how to perform, how to, you know, that iconic yellow book with the engine in the front, that he still has that Gene Berg.

45:32.858 --> 45:37.381
[SPEAKER_00]: I read that book and I saw the VRNs that got lots cool, England VRNs, you know,

45:39.798 --> 45:41.359
[SPEAKER_00]: And I knew that was a hot ticket, you know?

45:41.800 --> 45:43.221
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's touch on this Carmen Gia.

45:43.581 --> 45:46.643
[SPEAKER_01]: I know one of the cars that can add one that Renee had.

45:47.024 --> 45:47.744
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I see that.

45:48.065 --> 45:48.645
[SPEAKER_00]: I see.

45:48.725 --> 45:51.848
[SPEAKER_00]: And the only tell was, see that Playboy Air fresher.

45:52.108 --> 45:52.648
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, yeah.

45:53.149 --> 45:53.429
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.

45:54.550 --> 45:57.492
[SPEAKER_00]: So we didn't, we didn't advertise, we're like an outlock club.

45:57.892 --> 46:00.735
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you saw that, if you saw that, you're, yeah.

46:00.975 --> 46:04.898
[SPEAKER_00]: If you saw those, hanging from a mirror on a bug, you knew that was a bug's buggy card.

46:04.918 --> 46:05.699
[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't mess with it.

46:05.759 --> 46:07.300
[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't bother it, you didn't press still it.

46:08.472 --> 46:10.953
[SPEAKER_00]: So is this the guilla that we're about to talk about?

46:12.033 --> 46:14.494
[SPEAKER_01]: When it was red and then it became mine, when it was black.

46:14.554 --> 46:14.815
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.

46:15.095 --> 46:17.856
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you look at the first picture, this picture, find this picture.

46:18.476 --> 46:18.856
[SPEAKER_00]: I see it.

46:18.876 --> 46:20.497
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

46:20.557 --> 46:22.458
[SPEAKER_00]: You see the, you see the low rider bombs in the back?

46:22.918 --> 46:23.118
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

46:23.524 --> 46:35.012
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, dude, look at that, 1979 when you had smoothies, right, and had the carton rings, the original carbon rings, right, hard top canvas top, nobody was really doing that on Volkswagen's.

46:36.073 --> 46:38.695
[SPEAKER_00]: That's going back to the fanom tops and the little writer influence.

46:39.416 --> 46:44.880
[SPEAKER_00]: That street is 41st to the money carto in the corner in 1772.

46:45.580 --> 46:50.584
[SPEAKER_00]: So that street right there is 41st and Long Beach and the

46:52.816 --> 46:57.240
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you go around the corner, it's who he was a market across seat was a shot.

46:57.861 --> 47:00.163
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's how he took in the backgrounds.

47:00.524 --> 47:02.205
[SPEAKER_01]: The badass one with the corner windows.

47:02.786 --> 47:03.146
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course.

47:03.346 --> 47:04.988
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a nice truck.

47:05.529 --> 47:05.649
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

47:05.669 --> 47:05.809
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

47:05.949 --> 47:06.189
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

47:06.209 --> 47:09.773
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's goes to those are who he was car the founder of the Duke's.

47:10.473 --> 47:13.897
[SPEAKER_00]: And really, you know, his mom has actually.

47:15.223 --> 47:23.768
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a mom's house, but probably you'll live right next door, and you really will keep us cars there in the front, but then you know, then you go certainly keep on going in the next picture.

47:24.428 --> 47:25.309
[SPEAKER_00]: Now it has alloys.

47:26.490 --> 47:30.652
[SPEAKER_00]: Have you seen an ex-picture in front of the rear part, the red gear, the red gear.

47:31.446 --> 47:57.543
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

47:58.102 --> 48:01.383
[SPEAKER_00]: Like they would open the back door and push it across street and they'd go back to their body shop.

48:01.824 --> 48:06.285
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where we like would find out all the endless bumpers, all the stuff they would take off and all that.

48:07.566 --> 48:10.787
[SPEAKER_00]: So, and then, didn't became black.

48:10.847 --> 48:11.447
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at the black.

48:11.487 --> 48:13.128
[SPEAKER_00]: That's because I saw that.

48:13.428 --> 48:17.090
[SPEAKER_00]: A Renee had a like a fatal attraction girlfriend.

48:17.130 --> 48:24.033
[SPEAKER_00]: This was just between us and she like saw them with another girl and she and the car, the back, the gear.

48:27.980 --> 48:32.126
[SPEAKER_00]: and he took his drive train out in his wheels and I'd go every day, I want that car, man.

48:32.567 --> 48:34.170
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, your brother painted it black.

48:35.011 --> 48:35.892
[SPEAKER_00]: I got his drive train.

48:35.912 --> 48:37.475
[SPEAKER_00]: I got all those, you know.

48:38.436 --> 48:39.398
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I made a trade.

48:39.438 --> 48:41.521
[SPEAKER_00]: I had a 59 rag top all original flambles.

48:42.342 --> 49:05.161
[SPEAKER_00]: always goes give me that and I'll give you the gifts I get to see but that's the thing back thing we were trading cars like nothing right we were trading cars like I would build an oval rag and have it for two weeks and one of my guys saying man I don't know I've never had an oval I'd you know trade them something or buy it or sell it or yeah I don't know about doing that today but we would just trade cars the main thing is like the cow looked guys

49:09.976 --> 49:11.417
[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't building rag tops.

49:11.477 --> 49:12.658
[SPEAKER_00]: There was always exceptions.

49:12.718 --> 49:16.860
[SPEAKER_00]: But do you want it to look like a standard early car?

49:17.040 --> 49:18.981
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the standard factory German cars?

49:19.001 --> 49:20.102
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have molding trim.

49:20.122 --> 49:21.763
[SPEAKER_00]: They look real sparse, right?

49:21.783 --> 49:24.484
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's put it when those do the over ones.

49:24.725 --> 49:26.806
[SPEAKER_00]: They look like a caloric car back then, right?

49:27.466 --> 49:31.248
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's put just put center lines or BRNMs or Fife spoke their reason on them.

49:32.089 --> 49:38.313
[SPEAKER_00]: So me, no, I know all the guys were going to realize I went to school at the 80s caloric club, guys.

49:40.368 --> 49:48.793
[SPEAKER_00]: Once it Japan, at the same time, and I'm talking early on because there's definitely a band of cars all the way up into the mid-90s, and I guess they're still buying, but now they're economy's strong.

49:48.813 --> 49:51.355
[SPEAKER_00]: This is when their economy was really strong.

49:52.055 --> 50:03.763
[SPEAKER_00]: They were buying buildings in downtown LA around this time, age 33, so they would go to the shows and, you know, and so all my low-writer people and family were selling cars.

50:03.883 --> 50:07.405
[SPEAKER_00]: That's where, and if you ever see Julio,

50:08.417 --> 50:14.400
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's Julio and Fernando or any of you are very McGuire, McGuire's wax, yeah, 90s.

50:14.420 --> 50:15.180
[SPEAKER_00]: They talk about that.

50:15.460 --> 50:25.365
[SPEAKER_00]: They talk about how the low rider spread, it's big over there now, it's a kind of culture and low riding and our Volkswagen was around that time because they were taking them over there and that's where.

50:26.082 --> 50:35.324
[SPEAKER_00]: Calstyle, for a set outside of Los Angeles or California was Japan, because they were buying our cars in a 3-845.

50:36.384 --> 50:42.465
[SPEAKER_01]: This Carmen Geeks, I know he's historically, this was part of this was, how do I say Renee's last name?

50:43.185 --> 50:47.046
[SPEAKER_01]: Red Loth, Red Loth, R-U-E-L-A-S.

50:47.226 --> 50:49.466
[SPEAKER_01]: If you bought it, it's okay, man.

50:49.486 --> 50:52.387
[SPEAKER_00]: We got bad, but yeah, Red Loth.

50:55.327 --> 50:56.188
[SPEAKER_01]: Sixy seven gear.

50:56.728 --> 50:56.968
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.

50:57.228 --> 50:57.449
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.

50:57.549 --> 50:58.830
[SPEAKER_01]: I would say had that gear back, man.

50:59.530 --> 50:59.810
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.

50:59.890 --> 51:02.232
[SPEAKER_00]: It had deep six, 901 food celery around.

51:02.893 --> 51:02.993
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm.

51:03.553 --> 51:04.834
[SPEAKER_00]: Look good for sure.

51:05.314 --> 51:07.196
[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a reason why we will go in deep sixes.

51:07.236 --> 51:08.857
[SPEAKER_00]: Now they go four and a half and deep sixes.

51:09.572 --> 51:28.827
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a reason for that because we're putting 125 or 135 and again, going back to the lower end for months, if you've seen like the Supreme, the two spokes, they were 13 inch, but they had a real small bias play tire, really tuned whatever and they would bow out on the sides.

51:28.847 --> 51:29.607
[SPEAKER_00]: You haven't ever seen that?

51:30.748 --> 51:33.130
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the wind was wide, but the tire is ready.

51:33.937 --> 51:34.337
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

51:34.357 --> 51:35.618
[SPEAKER_00]: So we're trying to emulate that.

51:35.998 --> 51:57.793
[SPEAKER_01]: Look with a six things wide with a 135 and it did it did this was a topic this week because your real started before I don't normally that never happens because normally I have you know we don't lose power and and I and I have the opportunity to to finish the the the the episode but

51:58.513 --> 52:23.783
[SPEAKER_01]: popular topic this week online very popular 23,000 views popular was LA Cal style versus Cal look right yeah it's very easy to identify a man yeah so let's let let let let let let let let's talk about that that confusion or what yeah because look if you look at how look card now yeah basically it's it's an all original card with the race stance now because they're putting

52:26.168 --> 52:53.577
[SPEAKER_00]: look around here since uh uh white car you know and I saw the transition because uh the DKK guys the the the 80s cow look guys I went to school with a lot of them even back then they were telling me there was like argument within the club because no we wanted to be chrome no we want we like the moldings of this and that so that's where that term rest of cow okay from and that was an outsider that termed it and I know who it was uh it was step on

52:54.447 --> 52:56.568
[SPEAKER_00]: He was in outside of that, he coined that term.

52:57.449 --> 52:58.930
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, look, we started.

52:59.590 --> 53:00.570
[SPEAKER_00]: We never used that.

53:01.531 --> 53:02.692
[SPEAKER_00]: It's an outsider's term.

53:03.432 --> 53:11.277
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be between you, it's like, they're trying to take credit for what we did, and you know, gentrifying it.

53:11.617 --> 53:18.280
[SPEAKER_00]: And me and all the OGs and all the people from the teconos, we're not going to have it because, you know,

53:21.447 --> 53:23.168
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's all I'm going to say.

53:23.208 --> 53:33.335
[SPEAKER_01]: So, so maybe for for the listeners, then for the ones that are confused, maybe explain what was what was fundamentally different about what you guys were doing in Los Angeles.

53:34.696 --> 53:47.485
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and we never got there time because no magazines were coming to our separate low-rated magazine street beat, although like the subculture magazines now the bottom line, I know it's called that the spirit of the build.

53:48.015 --> 54:01.848
[SPEAKER_00]: When I tell people, when you're going for a California look in a hot rod, or you build this car with a vision of like, this is low-red or influence, you know, that's all about a line is, what was your vision and what was the spirit behind the build?

54:02.889 --> 54:08.614
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and if it wasn't like, like I build cars, I've never owned a deep chrome car in my

54:14.353 --> 54:18.496
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I might have a race car, the last bug in 30, that bug in 32.

54:18.676 --> 54:31.807
[SPEAKER_00]: I put one of my motors in a fiberglass front in the car, you know, but that I just got the body cheap, the car cheap and just put my motor in dry training, just to try it on the track of the 17-year-old kid, but as far as me, yeah.

54:31.887 --> 54:34.629
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a difference, it's pretty, you know, you have cow look.

54:35.205 --> 54:43.969
[SPEAKER_00]: hot rod performance, rock and roll, we have Calstyle, laureator influence, old v's, the Chicano culture.

54:44.609 --> 54:47.830
[SPEAKER_00]: That's it, that's the difference, you know?

54:48.190 --> 54:50.631
[SPEAKER_01]: And Resto Cal was outsider.

54:51.352 --> 54:57.834
[SPEAKER_00]: That was outsider, and that's what the catalog guys kind of use now for their cars that look like our cars.

54:58.174 --> 55:01.576
[SPEAKER_00]: So we can have always now, but to have a race dance,

55:05.040 --> 55:30.281
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, and the term, you know, that's back then, like I have friends with Europe, Belgium and England, they all get it now, because when I broke it all down and I've been on their podcast, I've been in their magazines written, they get it now, because they always said, this is a guy, how do you kind of go from here, you know, and even the guys from Brazil, there was a president, unfortunately, passed away from the Brazilian folks,

55:30.966 --> 55:56.530
[SPEAKER_00]: people studying you know Hollywood a lot there's a lot of music schools there people come learn guitar and all that they want to be a big musician whatever so he was a musician and he ended up doing well and back home but he he was at right then Hollywood Boulevard it was a guitar learning place like a guitar academy he was members as a young man he's I see solace cars there was slam the original

56:00.947 --> 56:10.050
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and he, and when I finally like, because then I was raising the family and then about 20 years, I came back in and dropped all my pictures because I saw all of like, what's all this confusing?

56:10.890 --> 56:12.590
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, nobody was going to be 484.

56:12.890 --> 56:15.351
[SPEAKER_00]: And I have the, I have the receipts to prove it.

56:15.371 --> 56:16.131
[SPEAKER_00]: I have all the pictures.

56:16.651 --> 56:17.712
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when I challenged anybody.

56:17.732 --> 56:21.213
[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody pictured it in this, you know, what he has, I'm still waiting for that proof.

56:21.853 --> 56:28.895
[SPEAKER_00]: So he said, you finally put the gap in because I saw cars that were way before these guys

56:30.214 --> 56:36.855
[SPEAKER_00]: started it and blah, blah, blah, because I saw it when I was a kid studying music and Hollywood.

56:37.916 --> 56:40.096
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, yeah, but you know, we can go real deep.

56:40.176 --> 56:40.516
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't.

56:40.556 --> 56:55.939
[SPEAKER_00]: I just want them to know spirit of the build, you know, high performance race, Volkswagen, with the D-pistory in the 60s, to the 70s, you know, are our precursors with those low-writer products, because they're already

57:00.201 --> 57:08.164
[SPEAKER_00]: You had the five regards vendors, right, with a little lip, and, but they had the back decambered, they're had, they put out the front, you know?

57:08.284 --> 57:10.344
[SPEAKER_00]: So, and there was a transition.

57:10.845 --> 57:15.586
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the last two 70s low-writer build was 82.

57:16.347 --> 57:17.927
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the last of my saw that has show.

57:18.207 --> 57:20.888
[SPEAKER_00]: So, there was a transition from 78 to like 82.

57:21.128 --> 57:24.609
[SPEAKER_00]: Still traditional low-writer, but Volkswagen's, and then we started coming out with ours.

57:29.884 --> 57:32.847
[SPEAKER_01]: start to notice that the style started to catch.

57:33.848 --> 57:38.012
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, I guess a world audience you talk to.

57:38.032 --> 57:38.733
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be telling you.

57:38.793 --> 57:43.918
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I was always busy raising a family doing my career, but I always kept my finger in the scene.

57:43.978 --> 57:45.700
[SPEAKER_00]: I was still buying the magazines and all that.

57:46.520 --> 58:02.291
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I don't know if you remember Richard Rivera, Rich 50, he had it from the German folks, he had a Texas Brown split window, rag top, 1950, this was built in like, 90, but 94 and 95.

58:02.931 --> 58:09.856
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, that car was previously back, black on a transporter in like the 84, Hotby OE's magazine, you know?

58:10.436 --> 58:11.617
[SPEAKER_00]: But he anyway, he found the car,

58:12.342 --> 58:27.205
[SPEAKER_00]: You had it redone by buddy hail of type one restoration is one of the first builds, you know, for the time most pretty awesome, you know, that car out was at a show in, you know, or up in mind you wasn't back in the scene.

58:27.265 --> 58:30.925
[SPEAKER_00]: I just was still in the car scene going to the low writer shows my family stuff.

58:31.605 --> 58:32.385
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw that car.

58:32.405 --> 58:34.186
[SPEAKER_00]: I hope on jack stands out.

58:34.206 --> 58:34.626
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking.

58:35.706 --> 58:40.287
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just something like you just know, like I know, I saw that split window rag top.

58:41.827 --> 58:44.628
[SPEAKER_00]: But fully polished, no, chrome plated alloys.

58:45.148 --> 58:46.449
[SPEAKER_00]: The German folks, man, that's all.

58:46.469 --> 58:47.109
[SPEAKER_00]: They're home of the level.

58:47.129 --> 58:47.830
[SPEAKER_00]: They're perfected.

58:47.850 --> 58:51.171
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, low-right influences cars to this day.

58:51.191 --> 58:52.692
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, their cars are like perfect.

58:53.352 --> 59:01.055
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and honestly, if I hadn't gotten the scene, I'd probably be in the German folks today, because, you know, because I knew all the guys back then.

59:01.664 --> 59:28.228
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and Ruben Navarro, all the guys that are in it now, all the LA guys that are in it now, I knew I'm going back to Tony with this black 55, I just talk to Tony yesterday, so I knew all these guys, so it would have been a natural progression, you know, who knows, but now I'm not affiliated because this problem, so going back to that, I saw that car.

59:29.430 --> 59:32.551
[SPEAKER_00]: I was looking around and go, man, that has to be a lose in this term.

59:32.651 --> 59:35.372
[SPEAKER_00]: It has to be a trip on a own car looking around.

59:36.153 --> 59:38.193
[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody was around, it couldn't say it's okay, so I had to leave.

59:38.834 --> 59:43.496
[SPEAKER_00]: Then the second car I saw was a car that was one CRG.

59:44.116 --> 59:51.098
[SPEAKER_00]: You passed away, but he had a stolen the club, yet a European 57 Samba, 23 window, beautiful car.

59:56.373 --> 01:00:04.619
[SPEAKER_00]: beautiful car and this is the first of my saw was at Bob's big Warren Burbank because they do all American cars hot rods so like that car stood out.

01:00:04.859 --> 01:00:08.061
[SPEAKER_00]: He was a standing there and I'm looking at this car travel map.

01:00:08.121 --> 01:00:12.084
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just something about the essence of the car I could tell, right?

01:00:13.285 --> 01:00:17.948
[SPEAKER_00]: There goes this is a Chicano house on this car and sure enough.

01:00:18.548 --> 01:00:19.389
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm looking at him,

01:00:25.384 --> 01:00:26.224
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to wait a minute.

01:00:26.264 --> 01:00:27.365
[SPEAKER_00]: Those aren't deep sixes.

01:00:27.565 --> 01:00:28.645
[SPEAKER_00]: Those are nine eleven hours.

01:00:28.845 --> 01:00:32.707
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, if you know what nine eleven hours are, there's seven inch wide ultra rare.

01:00:33.587 --> 01:00:39.489
[SPEAKER_00]: Do we're on the race courses of 971 72 seven inch, but they look at the front of a six.

01:00:40.249 --> 01:00:42.610
[SPEAKER_00]: And they go for like a pair like seven eight nine grand.

01:00:43.330 --> 01:00:43.670
[SPEAKER_01]: Damn.

01:00:43.690 --> 01:00:46.251
[SPEAKER_00]: So, so he cartels box for me goes.

01:00:47.672 --> 01:00:48.192
[SPEAKER_00]: They go math.

01:00:48.212 --> 01:00:51.093
[SPEAKER_00]: You got some four and a half and got some hearts.

01:00:51.293 --> 01:00:54.654
[SPEAKER_00]: Really, I was on the 91's and those, you know, those are.

01:00:55.564 --> 01:00:57.345
[SPEAKER_00]: I go, yeah, they're looking like an angry living.

01:00:57.365 --> 01:00:59.786
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so you just freaked out, like, how would you know that?

01:01:00.467 --> 01:01:10.152
[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know, you can look half the spokes, you can see the distance, that's only tip off, you know, and I did, but yeah, so that was the second time.

01:01:10.172 --> 01:01:18.037
[SPEAKER_00]: Then we started talking, and I said, yeah, I used to do all this, I used to build all these cars like this, L.A. style, vintage, you know, he knew everything, he was a little younger.

01:01:18.892 --> 01:01:23.035
[SPEAKER_00]: He's probably about five, six years younger.

01:01:23.716 --> 01:01:27.959
[SPEAKER_00]: So he was seeing as a kid, seeing all these cars, and then he started building them.

01:01:27.979 --> 01:01:33.124
[SPEAKER_00]: He worked for Cautch, and you know, unfortunately, passed away, and that's where he met high middle kids, where I was with today.

01:01:34.124 --> 01:01:37.127
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I thought, yeah, man, I know high men.

01:01:37.549 --> 01:01:38.810
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm really like chipped out.

01:01:38.830 --> 01:01:46.416
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I mean, I've known Himes since 81 when my family introduced me to him, you know, Renee.

01:01:47.177 --> 01:01:49.078
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and Himes always been a loretta guy too.

01:01:49.478 --> 01:01:50.840
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's how he does today.

01:01:50.880 --> 01:02:01.448
[SPEAKER_00]: Even though he works on Volkswagen's and Billson for Codge, he has 47, 38, who's just telling about one of his other projects was 47, he's gonna get back together.

01:02:02.517 --> 01:02:08.622
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, those two cars, you know, go man, they're making, they're building these cars to a whole little level now.

01:02:08.682 --> 01:02:11.304
[SPEAKER_00]: Now that's not as, you know, they'll money during what we can.

01:02:11.324 --> 01:02:12.045
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.

01:02:13.246 --> 01:02:16.548
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when I started saying, okay, I want to build another car.

01:02:16.568 --> 01:02:18.410
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to go back into scene because look at this.

01:02:18.890 --> 01:02:21.352
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when I did, have you read the song by thread?

01:02:22.313 --> 01:02:23.374
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't remember the Cal style.

01:02:24.094 --> 01:02:25.736
[SPEAKER_01]: I've read through it over time.

01:02:25.836 --> 01:02:27.477
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I just start that.

01:02:28.177 --> 01:02:31.140
[SPEAKER_00]: I just, the guy that started it,

01:02:31.795 --> 01:02:32.535
[SPEAKER_00]: was younger than me.

01:02:32.555 --> 01:02:33.495
[SPEAKER_00]: He saw my cars.

01:02:33.935 --> 01:02:34.896
[SPEAKER_00]: It was so different.

01:02:35.356 --> 01:02:36.556
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why you said who we went.

01:02:36.936 --> 01:02:39.237
[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a bunch of thread already.

01:02:39.337 --> 01:02:41.397
[SPEAKER_00]: And then somebody told me about it.

01:02:42.257 --> 01:02:44.098
[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy because I didn't even know about the song.

01:02:44.438 --> 01:02:45.558
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like early on, right?

01:02:46.558 --> 01:02:47.278
[SPEAKER_00]: So I read it.

01:02:48.179 --> 01:02:52.159
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I dropped all my pictures, man, and that caused a firestorm.

01:02:52.880 --> 01:02:54.880
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, we've been like,

01:02:59.928 --> 01:03:04.192
[SPEAKER_00]: The white one was built in 80, I got it, I started taking a part built.

01:03:04.252 --> 01:03:05.153
[SPEAKER_00]: 82 was completed.

01:03:05.173 --> 01:03:14.623
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and it was, that was the first, that's why it's in the Wikipedia because it was like the first purpose built although right in fact, completely taking a part.

01:03:15.234 --> 01:03:21.156
[SPEAKER_00]: painted by the best low writer painter, interior, we've done the stock by the best low writer, interior guy.

01:03:21.996 --> 01:03:26.457
[SPEAKER_00]: Alloys, everything was done like if I, in my mind, thinking it was a low writer.

01:03:27.318 --> 01:03:32.979
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that's why if you look at the Wikipedia entry, that's my car.

01:03:33.660 --> 01:03:33.880
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:03:34.760 --> 01:03:34.940
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:03:35.720 --> 01:03:37.821
[SPEAKER_00]: And going back to, we weren't going around taking pictures.

01:03:38.001 --> 01:03:39.681
[SPEAKER_00]: It was all these pictures that we have.

01:03:39.701 --> 01:03:41.562
[SPEAKER_00]: The girl, our girlfriends took a

01:03:42.472 --> 01:03:48.675
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we look at we have them because we can prove that we had them, you know, I was going to say who was who was the one with the camera.

01:03:49.375 --> 01:03:57.899
[SPEAKER_00]: So you just saw a girlfriend like the one my white car and then back there, I don't remember, you had to you had to they had a role film and you had to raise you fill it up.

01:03:57.959 --> 01:04:00.921
[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to like, and then you had to go get developed.

01:04:00.941 --> 01:04:04.002
[SPEAKER_00]: So I had like a glove box full of like four or five.

01:04:04.925 --> 01:04:06.187
[SPEAKER_00]: And then you pick a bunch, right?

01:04:06.207 --> 01:04:09.732
[SPEAKER_00]: To co-dact or whatever, to get a little drink of that.

01:04:10.172 --> 01:04:22.129
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so like, it was always a lag maybe minimum four months to like eight nine months before you develop your film, you know, so.

01:04:23.254 --> 01:04:23.874
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember that.

01:04:24.015 --> 01:04:28.877
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember developing film in the in the 90s, early 90s, late 80s.

01:04:29.378 --> 01:04:34.621
[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember when you would get them back, you'd be like, oh, I forgot I took these pictures.

01:04:34.721 --> 01:04:35.361
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.

01:04:35.601 --> 01:04:36.302
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:04:36.602 --> 01:04:37.262
[SPEAKER_01]: That feeling.

01:04:37.403 --> 01:04:37.703
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:04:38.103 --> 01:04:38.703
[SPEAKER_01]: For sure.

01:04:40.905 --> 01:04:45.688
[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to touch on about what time it was when you started to realize.

01:04:47.480 --> 01:04:53.885
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess more of this cow style, you know, when you started the Renaultis, what year was it when Japan?

01:04:53.905 --> 01:05:00.029
[SPEAKER_01]: I know you said you had even touched on earlier that you noticed that Japan was probably so early adopters.

01:05:00.089 --> 01:05:00.890
[SPEAKER_01]: What year was it?

01:05:01.270 --> 01:05:06.995
[SPEAKER_00]: So the first call by notice that was during it, with the German folks, all right.

01:05:07.876 --> 01:05:11.839
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when I said, oh man, they're all guys in the neighborhood, you know, so like, you know,

01:05:13.015 --> 01:05:16.757
[SPEAKER_00]: So we call 90s, because most of them were teens in the 90s.

01:05:16.777 --> 01:05:24.522
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, maybe eight or nine behind us, except for the few OGs that I know that, you know, like Tony and all those guys, right?

01:05:24.542 --> 01:05:28.144
[SPEAKER_00]: They're kind of our era with a disc, oh, and the mobile DJs.

01:05:28.965 --> 01:05:33.588
[SPEAKER_00]: So when I seen their cars, and they had a Japanese chapter, it's a panchapter.

01:05:33.608 --> 01:05:40.652
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's when I started reading and going back and all that, and then I said, okay, it's going worldwide.

01:05:41.247 --> 01:05:41.507
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.

01:05:41.647 --> 01:05:46.650
[SPEAKER_00]: And then again, the Brazilian folk guy reached out to me and showed me his pictures and go, man, look at that.

01:05:47.971 --> 01:05:49.151
[SPEAKER_00]: Chrome played it alloys.

01:05:49.632 --> 01:05:51.392
[SPEAKER_00]: All original split windows and all that.

01:05:52.233 --> 01:05:52.853
[SPEAKER_00]: Japan.

01:05:53.133 --> 01:06:01.858
[SPEAKER_00]: And then when I knew it was worldwide, but to see it in person, it was when I first went to England of all 20 years ago from in 20.

01:06:02.578 --> 01:06:05.320
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe maybe like 16, 17 years ago.

01:06:06.708 --> 01:06:12.130
[SPEAKER_00]: And I saw all these cars installed, perfect, slammed on all those big motors.

01:06:12.983 --> 01:06:13.944
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm going okay.

01:06:13.964 --> 01:06:14.924
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's it's pretty.

01:06:15.204 --> 01:06:17.206
[SPEAKER_00]: But going back to the VHS, right?

01:06:17.966 --> 01:06:20.688
[SPEAKER_00]: There would be going to promote a swap meet, right?

01:06:20.848 --> 01:06:22.289
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's from the VHS for a came out.

01:06:22.309 --> 01:06:27.372
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when you would see that people of video tape in the German folk cars and other L.A. cars.

01:06:27.632 --> 01:06:29.253
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, big old thing, right?

01:06:29.874 --> 01:06:32.876
[SPEAKER_00]: So then people would upload it to, I don't know, man.

01:06:32.896 --> 01:06:36.238
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't think YouTube, whatever they had it, right?

01:06:36.758 --> 01:06:39.420
[SPEAKER_00]: And then that's when it started spreading.

01:06:40.000 --> 01:06:43.164
[SPEAKER_00]: And then eventually the cards became expensive, right?

01:06:43.284 --> 01:06:43.764
[SPEAKER_00]: Worth money.

01:06:44.525 --> 01:06:47.929
[SPEAKER_00]: So now it's a practical way to do it now because you restored to correct.

01:06:48.690 --> 01:06:51.553
[SPEAKER_00]: And now I'm ruining it because all this is French and parts now are all bolt on.

01:06:51.573 --> 01:06:53.095
[SPEAKER_00]: You can pick them off, right?

01:06:53.255 --> 01:06:55.237
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and then you can put it back to stock.

01:06:56.058 --> 01:06:56.538
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.

01:06:56.578 --> 01:06:57.599
[SPEAKER_00]: So that kind of, like,

01:07:00.360 --> 01:07:05.845
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, the first time I really saw it was when the German folks were doing their thing man.

01:07:05.925 --> 01:07:08.287
[SPEAKER_00]: They were all over the magazines, you know, in the 90s.

01:07:09.268 --> 01:07:10.669
[SPEAKER_00]: They were all over the magazines.

01:07:11.289 --> 01:07:12.971
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and all those guys are cool.

01:07:13.191 --> 01:07:17.435
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like when I had my big show at the San of the park, they have a center area.

01:07:18.293 --> 01:07:21.115
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, their club is permanently going to be in that center area.

01:07:21.135 --> 01:07:27.499
[SPEAKER_00]: The four clubs, uh, it's just the passing of club, the FDR, because that's their backyard.

01:07:27.519 --> 01:07:28.620
[SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's their area.

01:07:28.760 --> 01:07:30.061
[SPEAKER_00]: So out of respect, they're just okay.

01:07:30.081 --> 01:07:32.702
[SPEAKER_00]: You guys can, D.B.K.

01:07:32.742 --> 01:07:36.965
[SPEAKER_00]: Because all my guys that grew up with, we're in Pips Club, are still in Pips, D.B.

01:07:36.985 --> 01:07:37.365
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, D.B.

01:07:37.425 --> 01:07:37.825
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, D.B.

01:07:37.845 --> 01:07:37.925
[SPEAKER_00]: D.B.

01:07:37.945 --> 01:07:38.086
[SPEAKER_00]: D.B.

01:07:38.106 --> 01:07:38.266
[SPEAKER_00]: D.B.

01:07:39.147 --> 01:07:46.369
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the ones that do all the heavenly restorations and and split windows, all the praises stuff that come out of law and be chipped and you screw, right.

01:07:47.109 --> 01:08:01.153
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, all the club members are guys that grew up with, you know, Alex platform media, Robby Q with that's what these all guys that grew up in 100 and park or hide and park with so that's them, you know, and then, and then the other club is Mike, my partner for stuff.

01:08:01.173 --> 01:08:04.694
[SPEAKER_00]: He's all a dripers, they've been around for 25 years, so they're another drip cup.

01:08:05.514 --> 01:08:14.743
[SPEAKER_00]: But you want guys that I can point you to guys that have a deep history But there's always always looking always Connect me and you know, it doesn't have to be now.

01:08:14.783 --> 01:08:15.764
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't ever you want to do Bill.

01:08:15.784 --> 01:08:21.169
[SPEAKER_00]: He'll come on, man But you know, he's I don't know if you're general population public He's the big folks back in guy.

01:08:21.189 --> 01:08:30.077
[SPEAKER_00]: He worked out a big shop in a hop-up, you know, and Ancient builder street racer did all that and then you know at 18 just mean big

01:08:31.547 --> 01:08:33.008
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we didn't even know because they don't even know, right?

01:08:33.328 --> 01:08:50.077
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just that he left a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a,

01:08:57.118 --> 01:09:09.150
[SPEAKER_00]: The first time I learned about it, I used to read the paper all the time because I, I, I, I, I delivered the paper as a kid, right, so I read about I saw Bill, was he doing the paper?

01:09:09.903 --> 01:09:11.324
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why he left everything.

01:09:11.344 --> 01:09:16.368
[SPEAKER_00]: He just got picked up and then the rest of the history.

01:09:17.089 --> 01:09:18.610
[SPEAKER_00]: And now he goes on all the talks.

01:09:18.630 --> 01:09:25.876
[SPEAKER_00]: I was wondering how Fox News, he helped solve that Idaho, because he knows, because it's crazy.

01:09:25.996 --> 01:09:30.260
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm topic, but he was the youngest one to go on death row, saying Clinton, right?

01:09:30.800 --> 01:09:33.903
[SPEAKER_00]: So he was trusted by the warden trusted him.

01:09:33.983 --> 01:09:35.044
[SPEAKER_00]: That's right, he was not the paint.

01:09:35.204 --> 01:09:36.645
[SPEAKER_00]: And John, his paint is written for $100,000 in prison.

01:09:38.135 --> 01:09:38.295
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.

01:09:38.755 --> 01:09:41.757
[SPEAKER_00]: And he had a like it's nine by four foot south.

01:09:42.537 --> 01:09:42.697
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.

01:09:42.717 --> 01:09:44.858
[SPEAKER_00]: And when you're on death row, you can't be in a general population.

01:09:44.918 --> 01:09:46.118
[SPEAKER_00]: So you're like pretty isolated.

01:09:46.258 --> 01:09:47.819
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but he was so trusted.

01:09:48.099 --> 01:09:51.621
[SPEAKER_00]: He's been there so long that the warden said, hey, I got it.

01:09:51.681 --> 01:09:57.263
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to test you with watching out all the geriatric killers that throw people.

01:09:57.747 --> 01:10:06.472
[SPEAKER_00]: So he got to talk to Charles Manson, the hillside straggler, nightstop, or all the big day named California.

01:10:06.892 --> 01:10:08.453
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why he does a talk show.

01:10:08.493 --> 01:10:09.573
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's just coming up the book.

01:10:10.014 --> 01:10:19.879
[SPEAKER_00]: Because he knew in the mind, any help solve locations of very, like the most prolific serial killer, he helped

01:10:20.461 --> 01:10:38.871
[SPEAKER_00]: Those are for some of the families because they started trusting Bill and Bill was like, hey, you know, and you need to give your closure for your, you're going to die, you're going to die, you're going to die, you're going to die, you're going to die, you're going to die, you're going to dump the body, whatever, anyway, he did that and he helped him when he went out for parole.

01:10:39.131 --> 01:10:42.373
[SPEAKER_00]: So he, he was never going to get out, but then California governor,

01:10:43.187 --> 01:10:45.851
[SPEAKER_00]: say, okay, there's no more debt sentences in California.

01:10:46.111 --> 01:10:49.796
[SPEAKER_00]: So those automatically those debt centers turned into life, right?

01:10:49.856 --> 01:10:52.420
[SPEAKER_00]: And once you turn into life, there's more avenues, right?

01:10:53.193 --> 01:11:04.095
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you can now, fortunately, he got life possibility for Rowe, then at 60, when he hit 60, there's a geriatric law where you have to go in front of the Rowe board automatically in California.

01:11:05.115 --> 01:11:11.956
[SPEAKER_00]: So he went in, he kept his nose clean, you know, when you found out the law changed like seven or eight years.

01:11:12.056 --> 01:11:20.938
[SPEAKER_00]: And the first time he went up in the board, you're at a mile, because his works is, he, he would lecture at UCLA, all his universities, you know, like

01:11:22.834 --> 01:11:33.083
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the whole story, but he never talked about his Volkswagen background until he started talking to me because that life stopped for him right there.

01:11:33.683 --> 01:11:35.204
[SPEAKER_00]: But he didn't want to think about that.

01:11:35.244 --> 01:11:36.065
[SPEAKER_00]: He was never going to get out.

01:11:36.225 --> 01:11:39.168
[SPEAKER_00]: So his mind just bought that and didn't think about it.

01:11:39.628 --> 01:11:41.309
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because you'll go crazy in there, right?

01:11:42.490 --> 01:11:43.872
[SPEAKER_00]: You'll go crazy, right?

01:11:44.112 --> 01:11:47.114
[SPEAKER_01]: You certainly don't think about things that you like, right?

01:11:47.254 --> 01:11:49.136
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you can't have access to them anymore.

01:11:49.196 --> 01:11:50.397
[SPEAKER_01]: So you got to block that out.

01:11:52.209 --> 01:12:11.133
[SPEAKER_00]: After he found out that debt turned to life sentence, we sell to me and then he would go familiar with Frisper, from talking about our times and the bugs buddies and all the crazy stuff and I go dude, you gotta tell that story, you know, because he had to talk about it.

01:12:11.153 --> 01:12:14.894
[SPEAKER_00]: We saw a little bit in his first book, here to go to much in detail.

01:12:15.639 --> 01:12:24.288
[SPEAKER_00]: But then when he went on build so he kind of opened it up and he ever even remembered him because if he looked at a shop in the harbor on Orange County, you know, so yeah, that's a whole lot of story.

01:12:25.009 --> 01:12:35.019
[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, I wanted to mention him because his car was the first time I saw a stream of the old ad genios at that club and the thing that stuck out to me, I remember the other of these guys, that's why I got the moniker VW kit.

01:12:36.072 --> 01:12:37.133
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right, because he's a talent.

01:12:37.153 --> 01:12:42.617
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you want to car-style slam or lower, go see the kid over there, hunting some harp and stuffing me.

01:12:42.937 --> 01:12:44.918
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I was like three, four years jumping in all these guys.

01:12:44.938 --> 01:12:45.719
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, all right.

01:12:46.402 --> 01:12:53.147
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's nowadays there's nothing but when you're nothing but yeah, yeah, when I was 14, 15, you know, because we could drive a 15.

01:12:53.568 --> 01:12:53.888
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.

01:12:54.008 --> 01:12:55.109
[SPEAKER_00]: It's you, nothing.

01:12:55.709 --> 01:12:57.571
[SPEAKER_00]: My dad were two jobs at night.

01:12:57.931 --> 01:12:59.372
[SPEAKER_00]: I was running my own show, man.

01:12:59.432 --> 01:13:00.233
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a poor mom.

01:13:00.253 --> 01:13:01.453
[SPEAKER_00]: She didn't know what was going on.

01:13:01.494 --> 01:13:01.914
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:13:02.314 --> 01:13:02.634
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:13:02.674 --> 01:13:03.575
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the story.

01:13:03.615 --> 01:13:04.496
[SPEAKER_00]: It was back then.

01:13:05.457 --> 01:13:07.978
[SPEAKER_00]: So when I saw a car and I saw all the girls.

01:13:08.018 --> 01:13:09.460
[SPEAKER_00]: They had like four or five.

01:13:10.420 --> 01:13:11.481
[SPEAKER_00]: We called them touch of girls.

01:13:11.541 --> 01:13:15.264
[SPEAKER_00]: And when they used to go to all the clubs and all that, they're just just up at the 80s hair and all that.

01:13:16.065 --> 01:13:20.007
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's driving around the Anne Ragtop with his girls out of the Ragtop.

01:13:20.027 --> 01:13:21.868
[SPEAKER_00]: How old are you in the music playing?

01:13:21.968 --> 01:13:23.529
[SPEAKER_00]: I was a spook when I saw that.

01:13:23.849 --> 01:13:30.033
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I want to say 79, maybe eight years, you know.

01:13:31.794 --> 01:13:35.576
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, I started buying parts from my first world cragian without even having the car yet.

01:13:35.596 --> 01:13:45.001
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I was getting like bought endless hubcabs, running boards, because I knew what I wanted, you know, the mirrors, you know, so yeah.

01:13:46.684 --> 01:13:49.265
[SPEAKER_01]: How about some stories that people might not know?

01:13:49.605 --> 01:14:03.249
[SPEAKER_01]: Any stories from the early, early scene that, I mean, you're kind of telling some now, but yeah, any unknown, any groundbreaking stories that you wanna share?

01:14:03.629 --> 01:14:11.052
[SPEAKER_00]: Ah, let's see, man, I've written in so a lot, without being a snitch.

01:14:11.092 --> 01:14:13.512
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I mean, like I ask you to do that.

01:14:13.813 --> 01:14:15.033
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, but I mean,

01:14:15.981 --> 01:14:26.666
[SPEAKER_00]: Street-Rake stories, you know, when we took our car, one of my buddies ran, no, no, I'll took our car, took his car.

01:14:27.006 --> 01:14:29.047
[SPEAKER_00]: We said, fast, 67.

01:14:29.127 --> 01:14:30.427
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a Blacks of 67, right?

01:14:31.288 --> 01:14:35.349
[SPEAKER_00]: Gearbox, Gaphol's Bill, Steve Chems, Bill, engineering, everything.

01:14:35.850 --> 01:14:36.830
[SPEAKER_00]: We went to the Orange County

01:14:42.617 --> 01:14:58.126
[SPEAKER_00]: we would go all the time or flow into Maine, but one time we went and then I didn't know the person he raised the bug, another guy from Orange County, Mike, Nolty, he ended up becoming an MMA fighter and now he doesn't tie that because he trains.

01:15:00.107 --> 01:15:07.371
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know who that was at the time when we did a street race back then and no, no, no, I took

01:15:09.408 --> 01:15:21.831
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it was a fast race, but then when I, when Mike reached out to me, like, I want to say like two around the early 2000s, because he wanted me to, I know, he bought some split with the bumpers from you or something.

01:15:21.851 --> 01:15:22.731
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's how I met him.

01:15:23.511 --> 01:15:26.072
[SPEAKER_00]: And then after that, we're talking, he goes, oh, I was a heavy street race.

01:15:26.112 --> 01:15:27.612
[SPEAKER_00]: He showed me all the pictures and everything.

01:15:28.493 --> 01:15:31.713
[SPEAKER_00]: And then when I talked to Noah, no, wow, he's in Vegas now.

01:15:32.194 --> 01:15:33.674
[SPEAKER_00]: He saw the pictures that I posted.

01:15:34.603 --> 01:15:36.624
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was the car we went to at race.

01:15:36.884 --> 01:15:47.106
[SPEAKER_00]: And if that's a cool story, you haven't really been told, you know, the duration that now I met, you know, Mike Nullty, you know, that I went with them.

01:15:47.146 --> 01:15:48.426
[SPEAKER_00]: We traded the car over there.

01:15:48.446 --> 01:15:51.647
[SPEAKER_00]: We went through a rabbit, you know, yeah, yeah.

01:15:52.247 --> 01:16:02.710
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you want to touch on anything else on, I guess, maybe the low router connection and and of course, yeah, because I didn't even get to talk about my cousins who are

01:16:04.218 --> 01:16:25.955
[SPEAKER_00]: early 70s, if you know custom building cars, you know Bill Hines and all those guys that were building, you know, the candy flakes, the candy factory, so my cousins, so like mid 60s to early 70s, the low writers were.

01:16:33.925 --> 01:16:36.826
[SPEAKER_00]: The bombs have always been, the dukes have been around since 58.

01:16:36.946 --> 01:16:39.708
[SPEAKER_00]: So their movies had the 38s in the 47s.

01:16:39.768 --> 01:16:41.409
[SPEAKER_00]: But then the 60s had to unpaulers.

01:16:42.049 --> 01:16:42.289
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:16:42.709 --> 01:16:45.290
[SPEAKER_00]: The clubs like the Imperials, the Proof.

01:16:46.071 --> 01:16:49.252
[SPEAKER_00]: All those cars, they were starting to come into play.

01:16:49.272 --> 01:16:56.716
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like even brand new, 60s, you know, the policy of the two, three years old, they were just lower down, but keep it all original.

01:16:56.776 --> 01:16:58.717
[SPEAKER_00]: Sort of like our influence for us.

01:16:59.637 --> 01:17:01.318
[SPEAKER_00]: And so my cousins,

01:17:02.758 --> 01:17:07.681
[SPEAKER_00]: They had Bill Hines and she went, who's her other guy.

01:17:09.102 --> 01:17:10.563
[SPEAKER_00]: They just had them build their cars.

01:17:10.583 --> 01:17:16.507
[SPEAKER_00]: Tandy Apple colors are first like being perfected, can't help a red, and they would do like,

01:17:17.198 --> 01:17:25.580
[SPEAKER_00]: Rolls Royce Grill, people, I remember it because I was younger, I was like 9, 10, 11, they were never home because they were like 17, 18, 19, 20.

01:17:25.940 --> 01:17:30.181
[SPEAKER_00]: But we would go meet my dad and go visit his sister, my aunt, right?

01:17:30.921 --> 01:17:36.962
[SPEAKER_00]: But I could see their cars, their projects, all their trophies, back in the lower edge trophies were taller than the person, you know what I mean?

01:17:37.322 --> 01:17:40.783
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, trophies, I remember in the mid-truck world too, right?

01:17:40.843 --> 01:17:42.123
[SPEAKER_00]: The big trophies.

01:17:43.055 --> 01:17:50.745
[SPEAKER_00]: And I would go in there room and I see their plaques and their jackets and, you know, and I was like, man, he's just so cool.

01:17:50.785 --> 01:17:54.289
[SPEAKER_00]: I would see their their cars and all that stuff and

01:17:55.330 --> 01:17:59.874
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not until like later when I was older, I understood that they were innovating too.

01:18:00.894 --> 01:18:05.378
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and the batches are in the lower edder hall of fame, just like the dougs.

01:18:05.438 --> 01:18:08.820
[SPEAKER_00]: In the 90s, low edder magazine did it like a reunion for them.

01:18:09.321 --> 01:18:20.249
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just three weeks and goes to go out with them at the Ventura Nationals, which is the big cake custom, a greaser, a rockabilly scene, you know, they do the top

01:18:21.865 --> 01:18:29.828
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll touch their building today, you know, and and so I'll sit there and man and those guys are like the dudes man They're like people walk up to them.

01:18:29.848 --> 01:18:35.429
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like Because I'm used to that in the Volkswagen world, but when I go into their world I'm just like this is so cool.

01:18:35.469 --> 01:18:41.731
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean some server, you know, some guys remember you They hate video became a top man because you know again both worlds car world, right?

01:18:42.251 --> 01:18:44.092
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you go to low-rated shows and people know

01:18:44.885 --> 01:18:54.962
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, a lot of Cal style guys are LA style car guys they have a low rated two or a vehicle like the Mongols like the the low rider type party Davidson.

01:18:55.560 --> 01:19:04.382
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't know if you watch the Mayans, the TV show, the Mayans and the Offsuit, those are Mayans, and the son of art, and our friends with the Mainland.

01:19:05.022 --> 01:19:08.063
[SPEAKER_00]: Son of art, and our friends, which is supposed to be like the Hells Angels.

01:19:09.103 --> 01:19:20.166
[SPEAKER_00]: And the Mayans, like the Mongols, which is like California's Patreole Chicano, they're all like, you know, they're all either they're all on the bug at one time.

01:19:20.795 --> 01:19:24.516
[SPEAKER_00]: and you went to a little writing or they went into the hearty's, you know, all underground.

01:19:24.536 --> 01:19:25.997
[SPEAKER_00]: They're all outlawed outlawed people.

01:19:26.917 --> 01:19:30.338
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, here's a good question for you.

01:19:30.358 --> 01:19:42.382
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that in today's, today's world, the younger enthusiasts, the younger car enthusiasts, you think they really understand how much culture and history is behind.

01:19:43.962 --> 01:19:44.523
[SPEAKER_00]: these cars.

01:19:45.824 --> 01:19:52.472
[SPEAKER_00]: Some do, if they're dad or they're uncle or somebody, the second generation, but majority really don't.

01:19:53.087 --> 01:19:59.910
[SPEAKER_00]: That's where there's a lot of confusion, and also, uh, most kids, I love that they're forging their own way.

01:20:00.170 --> 01:20:01.851
[SPEAKER_00]: Like they're making their own styles, right?

01:20:01.871 --> 01:20:07.713
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the patina bills, the three-piece wheels, uh, yeah, I love it because that's just keeping our hobby growing.

01:20:08.134 --> 01:20:08.434
[SPEAKER_00]: It is.

01:20:08.454 --> 01:20:10.014
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's an advantage.

01:20:10.075 --> 01:20:10.775
[SPEAKER_01]: It's attractive.

01:20:10.895 --> 01:20:11.595
[SPEAKER_00]: It's attractive.

01:20:11.615 --> 01:20:11.875
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:20:11.915 --> 01:20:15.657
[SPEAKER_00]: So like, I see new styles all over in LA, or the sales.

01:20:16.604 --> 01:20:19.306
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there is only guys who build their own style.

01:20:19.546 --> 01:20:21.267
[SPEAKER_00]: The Hawaiian guys always do their own style.

01:20:21.307 --> 01:20:29.253
[SPEAKER_00]: They did the kind of like center lines, they always have center lines, but they had like the tail-legs chrome, that's like the Hawaiian style.

01:20:29.273 --> 01:20:31.234
[SPEAKER_00]: If you go back to the 80s, how we always make a scene.

01:20:31.917 --> 01:20:37.059
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll see the Hawaiian style, they have their own style, they have their own style, they still keep that style too, you know?

01:20:37.479 --> 01:20:51.625
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but that's why the mission for me is to teach the history, archive the history, not because, you know, some of us out just hold news or whatever, you know, some people like,

01:21:00.703 --> 01:21:06.869
[SPEAKER_00]: You always got to have base, you can't, you can't race history, you know, yeah, that's I see this week.

01:21:07.129 --> 01:21:22.904
[SPEAKER_01]: Some of these, what I would probably or you would buy both consider like a, you know, a rookie to the, to the scene, there, these guys are having the balls to make comments this week on, on some of the history, I'm like, man, you don't really know who you're talking to.

01:21:23.264 --> 01:21:24.205
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to talk.

01:21:24.245 --> 01:21:26.087
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, because,

01:21:26.700 --> 01:21:27.761
[SPEAKER_00]: Just let him pop, right?

01:21:27.961 --> 01:21:28.641
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course.

01:21:28.661 --> 01:21:30.382
[SPEAKER_01]: That's for me so many people got laughed.

01:21:30.602 --> 01:21:31.502
[SPEAKER_01]: I laughed at some of them.

01:21:31.582 --> 01:21:32.103
[SPEAKER_01]: I just laughed.

01:21:32.123 --> 01:21:33.343
[SPEAKER_01]: I just do laughing emoji.

01:21:33.443 --> 01:21:34.444
[SPEAKER_01]: I just laughed.

01:21:34.484 --> 01:21:35.184
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:21:35.304 --> 01:21:42.187
[SPEAKER_00]: I heard something today is, don't argue with the fool because then you guys are both be fools.

01:21:42.667 --> 01:21:44.248
[SPEAKER_00]: Just let them talk.

01:21:44.348 --> 01:21:45.709
[SPEAKER_00]: Let them argue by themselves.

01:21:46.469 --> 01:21:51.872
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that struck me, because that was in the card listening, you know, I listened to e-books and stuff.

01:21:51.932 --> 01:21:54.153
[SPEAKER_00]: So, and I struck me and I go, well, that applies.

01:21:54.833 --> 01:22:21.687
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because before I be like, oh, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,

01:22:22.268 --> 01:22:22.989
[SPEAKER_01]: up through today.

01:22:23.029 --> 01:22:29.215
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess we could say you're leading the vintage Volkswagen club of America, the Los Angeles region.

01:22:29.555 --> 01:22:29.815
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:22:29.836 --> 01:22:33.099
[SPEAKER_01]: It's something why why was it important for you to take on that role?

01:22:33.579 --> 01:22:34.460
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

01:22:34.480 --> 01:22:40.146
[SPEAKER_00]: So going back to my Fagali 66 son, Rue, I was a member and back then you had to

01:22:48.373 --> 01:22:55.919
[SPEAKER_00]: The guys that started it were like the innovators, there are good friends at Bob Scott from Vinnie's Volkswagen parts.

01:22:56.319 --> 01:23:12.150
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't even know what it had really was or anything back then, but I didn't know I liked the original vintage style because I would see those guys and talk to those guys at Vinnie's Volkswagen parts, older guys, you know, with their split windows, all the original, like they came from the war, they brought them after the

01:23:12.863 --> 01:23:15.746
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I always had to respect for elders.

01:23:16.106 --> 01:23:18.648
[SPEAKER_00]: I was just taught that way with my dad and mom and all that.

01:23:19.269 --> 01:23:21.290
[SPEAKER_00]: So when they're talking, I listen.

01:23:21.831 --> 01:23:23.232
[SPEAKER_00]: I respect what they're saying, right?

01:23:23.713 --> 01:23:28.557
[SPEAKER_00]: I really love the logo, the logo of the vintage looks like a club, right?

01:23:28.697 --> 01:23:36.784
[SPEAKER_00]: So when I became a member, and I would go to shows, and of course, the purest would be like, oh, how are you a member?

01:23:36.804 --> 01:23:37.985
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I was all slammed.

01:23:38.045 --> 01:23:38.806
[SPEAKER_00]: I've got to read it on.

01:23:39.545 --> 01:23:45.073
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember seeing anybody not being lowered, you know, it's all original NOS accessories and parts.

01:23:46.415 --> 01:23:47.977
[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing after the market on this car.

01:23:48.678 --> 01:23:54.587
[SPEAKER_00]: Even the mirrors, you know, essentially one-on-one mirror, the little lollipop mirror, you know, like I always say.

01:23:55.557 --> 01:24:08.973
[SPEAKER_00]: If you have any aftermarket parts like mirrors, like baby turbos, tornado, tornadoes or a week mirror, then you already, like, that's not what we're doing, you know, not to say different or bad.

01:24:09.013 --> 01:24:10.035
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just we want to do that.

01:24:10.255 --> 01:24:14.220
[SPEAKER_00]: We want to get the low rider style, all the original, you know, you look at a

01:24:15.152 --> 01:24:18.953
[SPEAKER_00]: a bomb, you know, 38, 39, you know what I mean?

01:24:19.013 --> 01:24:24.715
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they have period-correct accessories, but they keep all the, you know, all the results, stuff.

01:24:25.115 --> 01:24:26.916
[SPEAKER_00]: So what's the club mean to you today?

01:24:27.296 --> 01:24:31.498
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, older guys, it's not really like a club, like we get to get in all that.

01:24:31.618 --> 01:24:36.419
[SPEAKER_00]: It's more of an association with my Pagali 66 sun roof, which I didn't know what it was.

01:24:36.439 --> 01:24:37.800
[SPEAKER_00]: I just like the color combination.

01:24:38.440 --> 01:24:41.441
[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's a guy, you know, later on I found out it was a one year only car.

01:24:41.997 --> 01:24:57.210
[SPEAKER_00]: don't come in black with red interior or white for a white with the red interior and it was deemed after the red light district and the French district, you know, well, you can have a business transaction, you know what I mean?

01:24:57.250 --> 01:25:09.061
[SPEAKER_00]: And 81, 82, to join the joint, the both winners, both hand club, you're looking at the Hopkins magazine, you have a little small ad towards the back, with a PO box or something like that, you want to become a member,

01:25:10.243 --> 01:25:35.618
[SPEAKER_00]: And again, when I would go to Bob Scott's when he's walks out in parts, I was seeing his older cats, you know, the older guys that were into the split windows and all that correct stuff that they would be getting parts from Germany and, and, you know, I would talk to them, you know, and I was respect what they had to say, you know, I was raised that way, you know, respect their elders, so I would talk to them and they were more than having to talk to me.

01:25:36.339 --> 01:25:36.799
[SPEAKER_00]: And so,

01:25:37.716 --> 01:25:42.320
[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to become a member, so I filled it out, it sent an instant mail that out with the stamp and all that.

01:25:43.181 --> 01:25:50.307
[SPEAKER_00]: Got my membership certificate and a little window sticker and I put it on my car and my car was slammed on alloys.

01:25:51.308 --> 01:25:57.954
[SPEAKER_00]: All the original convertible get clear pop out windows, no aftermarket week, mayor, no aftermarket nothing.

01:25:58.295 --> 01:26:01.557
[SPEAKER_00]: The original FOOKE alloys, deep sixes all the way around.

01:26:01.577 --> 01:26:01.978
[SPEAKER_00]: We call them.

01:26:02.861 --> 01:26:14.387
[SPEAKER_00]: Lloyds or hearts because if you look at the minimum partner, but they have a heart because they're tubeless, that's because they're different, that's for the two placement and support.

01:26:15.148 --> 01:26:27.574
[SPEAKER_00]: So I had it back then and I would see I would go to sales and people were like, we kind of look at it like, well, you know, this car is slamming everything, but yeah, but it's all original,

01:26:32.924 --> 01:26:36.887
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so that wasn't that, but get the news letter.

01:26:36.907 --> 01:26:45.594
[SPEAKER_00]: You would get a little blue, like blue, little newsletter that was very food made on the Zerox and all that, but you do the cards, cards you could buy.

01:26:45.614 --> 01:26:46.595
[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.

01:26:46.635 --> 01:26:52.320
[SPEAKER_00]: You could see a Bond or a Somba for like $1,500, $1,000, a prize jacket or whatever.

01:26:52.620 --> 01:26:53.020
[SPEAKER_01]: All of that.

01:26:53.401 --> 01:26:53.941
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:26:54.281 --> 01:26:58.885
[SPEAKER_00]: Motor meter gaze sets NOS for like 20 bucks, 20 crazy stuff.

01:26:59.683 --> 01:27:07.456
[SPEAKER_00]: So, and then, you know, then I started from Mercedes going to school, married my wife, raising a family.

01:27:07.537 --> 01:27:08.298
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I kind of, you know,

01:27:09.113 --> 01:27:13.454
[SPEAKER_00]: Got out of that, got really into Mercedes-Benz, to do that.

01:27:13.714 --> 01:27:18.035
[SPEAKER_00]: I still wasn't the porces, because I've always, I still had my, I still had my first negative in porces.

01:27:19.296 --> 01:27:22.057
[SPEAKER_00]: So I still had my porces during that.

01:27:22.077 --> 01:27:28.298
[SPEAKER_00]: You would be tracking on being part of the porces on a club, stuff like that.

01:27:28.318 --> 01:27:30.259
[SPEAKER_00]: So when I came back into the scene, after like,

01:27:31.460 --> 01:27:45.836
[SPEAKER_00]: going back to seeing Rich 50 or Rich Rivera from my German folks as Texas Brown Swift window 50, I was like man, they're building these cars, they're all whole another level, you know?

01:27:46.676 --> 01:27:51.759
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, because there were poor kids back then, man, we didn't have the funds or sources to do that.

01:27:52.359 --> 01:27:53.660
[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a funny story.

01:27:53.680 --> 01:28:00.543
[SPEAKER_00]: So like the first car bought to get back in the scene, my oldest daughter was turning 16 driving age.

01:28:01.244 --> 01:28:04.766
[SPEAKER_00]: So I found an oval rag, a 56 oval rag top project.

01:28:04.786 --> 01:28:06.106
[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty clean, solid car, right?

01:28:06.627 --> 01:28:07.027
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.

01:28:07.387 --> 01:28:09.028
[SPEAKER_00]: Right at home, all happy and proud.

01:28:09.048 --> 01:28:13.490
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to build it together until my daughter looked at me like I was crazy.

01:28:15.342 --> 01:28:35.176
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want that, you know, pick about this, you know, where I live, a lot of Mercedes and plus I would bring home Mercedes-Benz, I could leave some branding Mercedes-Benz because I worked from Mercedes-Benz, so I always had a Mercedes-Benz, and the kids learned on old Mercedes-Benz, because they're very safe, as soon as it's cheap, like 300 D's and all that.

01:28:35.236 --> 01:28:40.240
[SPEAKER_00]: And then of course, the venture they got the cars they wanted, but it's a few of no, I don't

01:28:45.830 --> 01:28:48.092
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know man, I don't know, or crazy this.

01:28:48.153 --> 01:28:52.117
[SPEAKER_00]: I post it on Greg this and like a day later, man, and guy came and picked it up, I was all set.

01:28:52.677 --> 01:28:56.081
[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, so that was a cool little story because like, you know, that's how I was going to get back into it.

01:28:56.101 --> 01:29:00.485
[SPEAKER_00]: Then I go, okay, so I'm at the building for myself and I started looking for cars in this and that.

01:29:01.006 --> 01:29:06.332
[SPEAKER_00]: And I've always loved convertibles, gues, and rag tops.

01:29:06.712 --> 01:29:08.314
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and there's another crazy story.

01:29:08.354 --> 01:29:08.534
[SPEAKER_00]: So,

01:29:09.225 --> 01:29:13.189
[SPEAKER_00]: That then we went into buses the bus boys from Pico not that area man.

01:29:13.209 --> 01:29:13.769
[SPEAKER_00]: They're very hardcore.

01:29:13.789 --> 01:29:27.301
[SPEAKER_00]: They're the first one's like slam a bus on hours and like basically The writer check on the style bus right and I Had a bus I had a micro bus for like two weeks and I'm like

01:29:27.853 --> 01:29:28.553
[SPEAKER_00]: This is weird.

01:29:28.793 --> 01:29:37.556
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like the way it feels like you drive it, you know, when you sit in it, you're like all forward and they'll say, you got nah, I sold it and ended up getting, I don't know what I got.

01:29:37.616 --> 01:29:47.920
[SPEAKER_00]: I went to like 30 cars, I got a rag top or something because I convertible, my thing was convertibles and rag tops, but if I get a convertible, I would rather be have a convertible.

01:29:47.960 --> 01:29:55.943
[SPEAKER_00]: So and I love the convertible gears, always have ever since I saw like some of the bugs, what you guys have it and every day have the red one which ended up being mine,

01:29:57.287 --> 01:29:58.347
[SPEAKER_00]: down and went to Japan.

01:29:58.567 --> 01:30:04.229
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it was, yeah, but going back to the Venice Volkswagen Club.

01:30:04.890 --> 01:30:11.292
[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a need because, uh, alley, a, a, a, a,

01:30:12.066 --> 01:30:31.133
[SPEAKER_00]: There was never an LA chapter and I was wondering like why there was central central chapter, the San Francisco upnoted chapter, the Golden Gate chapter, which does solving the very strong net group, to do a lot of shows, a lot of support, a lot of events, central co-saving, and so I'm going well, why don't you

01:30:32.122 --> 01:30:34.683
[SPEAKER_00]: L.A., which is a large car culture.

01:30:35.004 --> 01:30:38.345
[SPEAKER_00]: Every spectacle of Volkswagen is not going to have a chapter here.

01:30:38.886 --> 01:30:41.407
[SPEAKER_00]: I joined the national when I came back in.

01:30:42.648 --> 01:30:47.950
[SPEAKER_00]: So the national sector at Wall, and then the president at the time, I sent him an email, hey, what do you think about this?

01:30:48.011 --> 01:30:49.131
[SPEAKER_00]: And they love that idea.

01:30:49.151 --> 01:30:52.193
[SPEAKER_00]: They were like, oh, right, just do it, you're right.

01:30:53.073 --> 01:30:55.635
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's how I formed a nonprofit,

01:30:57.263 --> 01:31:21.391
[SPEAKER_00]: I had a very, uh, a board, the initial board was I wanted to read a diverse and very, uh, so some sort of account from my, from my, I have a liberal hand pick because I wanted to be like, I've already said it once, we just like an alley thing, like, so anyway, that was tough one because, uh, varying different point of views, you know, kind of can be class.

01:31:21.451 --> 01:31:23.812
[SPEAKER_00]: We can class sometimes with the board meetings just like that.

01:31:24.688 --> 01:31:34.054
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, they all put in the resignation, you know, except that's fine, you know, the Galaxies put in the corporate book and all that.

01:31:35.015 --> 01:31:38.357
[SPEAKER_00]: But Markov was still on the board, so that's my guy with a 50 file with that today.

01:31:38.417 --> 01:31:40.178
[SPEAKER_00]: Markov, 50 fourth, what a book.

01:31:41.399 --> 01:31:48.083
[SPEAKER_00]: So then I said, okay, we're going to have to regroup and kind of like, one of the back burner with Anne, I said, you know what?

01:31:49.164 --> 01:31:54.746
[SPEAKER_00]: again, the new president came in, that's who you, I believe you had them on your podcast, right?

01:31:54.886 --> 01:31:55.746
[SPEAKER_00]: Eric, good man.

01:31:56.126 --> 01:31:56.387
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:31:56.587 --> 01:31:56.907
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:31:56.987 --> 01:32:09.011
[SPEAKER_00]: He came in and really got everything going, got discounts from Hagrid, boom, boom, you know, customer corporate, a lot of non-profit boards in earthy, so he just went to work.

01:32:09.551 --> 01:32:12.472
[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, okay, now let's go, man, let's go, let's go.

01:32:13.420 --> 01:32:32.880
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what we got to go in again, you know, then we did the loose digging event, that's when I brought my book stuff, he's on the board and I have a few others that are not even correlated on the board for checks and balances and yourself public information and one thing I love about the club.

01:32:33.610 --> 01:32:43.194
[SPEAKER_00]: We could use a logo because like when 1976 when it was sanctioned Volkswagen America was okay with it like it's like a sanction association.

01:32:43.454 --> 01:32:57.140
[SPEAKER_00]: So You know that's a long thing and you know some people say oh man Nobody here they go now but you get understand it's not like we Advocates especially the the national president he advocates for discounts that triple a

01:32:57.694 --> 01:32:58.414
[SPEAKER_00]: kind of thing, right?

01:32:58.835 --> 01:33:03.357
[SPEAKER_00]: You got to keep the history, especially in, you know, and so that's why I do it.

01:33:03.377 --> 01:33:13.643
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm involved because it's a nonprofit and, you know, I think we talked about this in the first episode where, yeah, I'm always about giving back, you know, I didn't grow up much.

01:33:13.723 --> 01:33:20.287
[SPEAKER_00]: My parents did the best they can, my dad worked with me, you know, was able to afford me to have my sisters to have a private education.

01:33:21.307 --> 01:33:23.769
[SPEAKER_00]: which they make a difference in our lives because we're all doing well.

01:33:23.829 --> 01:33:27.592
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, depending on what you think is well, but we're doing okay, all right.

01:33:28.233 --> 01:33:32.476
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm always grateful for that, my parents.

01:33:32.776 --> 01:33:39.802
[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to get back, because you know, that's why I'm involved with toy drives, people ask me, hey, if it's a non-profit, putting it on.

01:33:40.445 --> 01:33:41.745
[SPEAKER_00]: And you might help, I'm all there.

01:33:42.065 --> 01:33:47.007
[SPEAKER_00]: Even if it's not, if it's a good cause, I'm there to help whether promoting it, being involved.

01:33:47.287 --> 01:33:52.328
[SPEAKER_00]: I do the car show now for my high school stage on Bosco and Balfour.

01:33:52.808 --> 01:33:55.489
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm an alumni, I'm an alumni association.

01:33:56.249 --> 01:34:03.371
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm putting a team, I'm going to put a team together of other alumni's because the kids, or their parents graduate out with their kids, right?

01:34:03.411 --> 01:34:09.253
[SPEAKER_00]: So like now, one that was been working with, real nice lady, but her son graduated.

01:34:10.350 --> 01:34:12.611
[SPEAKER_00]: So now we got to start all over again.

01:34:12.691 --> 01:34:30.660
[SPEAKER_00]: So like I said, I was talking to the director who was a teacher when I was going there that let's put a board together of alumni that that space consistent and then the moms or the parent association come in, people started putting ideas and that way we can always carry it year to year.

01:34:30.880 --> 01:34:32.861
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's that thing I'm working on.

01:34:32.941 --> 01:34:33.481
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.

01:34:34.199 --> 01:34:39.341
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm all about giving back, you know, I'm on a board of nonprofits of undeserved youths.

01:34:40.101 --> 01:34:44.023
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Mike is to evolve with a great one in Pasadena.

01:34:44.743 --> 01:34:47.004
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that's my thing.

01:34:48.124 --> 01:34:49.925
[SPEAKER_01]: So full circle for you.

01:34:50.405 --> 01:34:54.986
[SPEAKER_01]: If you can go back, you can go back and time to late 70s.

01:34:55.187 --> 01:34:59.648
[SPEAKER_01]: And you could have a conversation with the young Robert VW kid.

01:35:00.188 --> 01:35:01.189
[SPEAKER_01]: What advice do you give him?

01:35:01.209 --> 01:35:01.829
[SPEAKER_01]: What do you tell him?

01:35:02.991 --> 01:35:04.692
[SPEAKER_00]: don't do it.

01:35:05.473 --> 01:35:10.637
[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't change a thing because that made me who I am, my character.

01:35:11.697 --> 01:35:17.722
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, growing up, the flowing area, flowing from park.

01:35:18.202 --> 01:35:19.183
[SPEAKER_00]: That was my whole paradigm.

01:35:20.258 --> 01:35:28.781
[SPEAKER_00]: Everything around me, you know, it's a little different growing up in a neighborhood that's lower economics and invited, you know, high-crime era.

01:35:29.581 --> 01:35:34.783
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the same things people do things that that was just kind of normal.

01:35:34.803 --> 01:35:36.083
[SPEAKER_00]: I always remember I didn't know.

01:35:36.103 --> 01:35:38.084
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not what you want to think about Boston Balfour.

01:35:38.124 --> 01:35:48.007
[SPEAKER_00]: I was out of my element because at that time, there was that many people of color, you know, now it's all all black and brown because of sports programs, you know,

01:35:48.745 --> 01:36:00.059
[SPEAKER_00]: But back then it wasn't so like I had I like all my buddies from Norwalk from East L.A. from Santa Fe Springs we were just hanging out all these you know Latinos back then in the early 80s.

01:36:00.119 --> 01:36:00.779
[SPEAKER_00]: I graduated in 1903.

01:36:02.181 --> 01:36:15.191
[SPEAKER_00]: So, which was cool, you know, and that opened my eyes for the bigger picture I go, man, not everybody wants something from your photography, you know, like, you know, not everybody's trying to come up on you or you know, you know, to be watching your back all the time, you know.

01:36:15.451 --> 01:36:23.778
[SPEAKER_00]: So, that opened my eyes for the bigger picture and the education route and all that, and you know, it's the education route and all that was able to do great things, you know.

01:36:24.118 --> 01:36:26.580
[SPEAKER_00]: And, but I wouldn't,

01:36:29.609 --> 01:36:36.474
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe one, you know, when I was a juvenile, you know, I was always like picture tickets.

01:36:36.615 --> 01:36:39.717
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd get pulled over, I'd have outstanding Warrens, bench Warrens.

01:36:39.737 --> 01:36:42.699
[SPEAKER_00]: So it would lock me up for the night and I was a juvenile.

01:36:42.719 --> 01:36:43.800
[SPEAKER_00]: My parents would go pick me up.

01:36:43.820 --> 01:36:45.401
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, one time that happened.

01:36:45.862 --> 01:36:47.283
[SPEAKER_00]: My mom and dad didn't pick me up.

01:36:47.443 --> 01:36:48.063
[SPEAKER_00]: They left me in.

01:36:48.604 --> 01:36:50.245
[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to take a bus.

01:36:50.926 --> 01:36:51.866
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

01:36:52.066 --> 01:36:54.608
[SPEAKER_00]: And my girlfriend at the time, her mom actually got me out.

01:36:54.628 --> 01:36:55.609
[SPEAKER_00]: Because my parents were done.

01:36:55.669 --> 01:36:56.350
[SPEAKER_00]: They were just like,

01:36:57.390 --> 01:37:00.231
[SPEAKER_00]: you got to figure this out on your own now you're disappointing us, right?

01:37:01.052 --> 01:37:01.632
[SPEAKER_00]: That happened.

01:37:01.712 --> 01:37:14.156
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was a crossroads because everybody had met even though the neighborhood, the guys from Florence, the veteran onels man, you know, there was a little circle parked around my block, where back then you would get jumped into a gang, right?

01:37:14.176 --> 01:37:17.217
[SPEAKER_00]: Like four or five guys would jump you in, like, you know, whatever.

01:37:18.051 --> 01:37:21.152
[SPEAKER_00]: 30 seconds a minute, and you have all the little lights to come true.

01:37:21.192 --> 01:37:28.393
[SPEAKER_00]: I told us watching and then after their guys done and they would all live up on him, but we would be on our bicycle at nine ten and every zone watching this.

01:37:28.934 --> 01:37:32.054
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, they're going back to like the writing too.

01:37:32.474 --> 01:37:40.296
[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't want to still say with a, and then Paula on the curb, you guys sitting down on the curb with the trunk doors open checking.

01:37:40.316 --> 01:37:47.218
[SPEAKER_00]: So, um, there was a little, there was a little, there was a little, a little spread of my life.

01:37:48.975 --> 01:37:53.739
[SPEAKER_00]: that I did drugs for a little bit, you know, and which was, I forget.

01:37:53.779 --> 01:38:11.994
[SPEAKER_00]: That's one thing I regret, you know, because I didn't need that, you know, I've been sober since I was now, like since 17, almost 18, you know, I just, but anyway, inside, one of the guys from Florence all the

01:38:13.315 --> 01:38:15.997
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he was in there and he saw me goes, man, what did you give him a pep talk?

01:38:16.037 --> 01:38:17.939
[SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing here for smarter than this?

01:38:17.959 --> 01:38:19.300
[SPEAKER_00]: Because they used to call me a little school boy.

01:38:19.320 --> 01:38:23.123
[SPEAKER_00]: That was my little nickname they gave me in the neighborhood, you know?

01:38:23.743 --> 01:38:25.605
[SPEAKER_00]: And that was a crossroads.

01:38:25.645 --> 01:38:31.930
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so then that's when I went full deep into like, you know, it's crazy.

01:38:31.950 --> 01:38:34.232
[SPEAKER_00]: Because at Bosco, it's an academic prep school, right?

01:38:35.193 --> 01:38:37.134
[SPEAKER_00]: 99% go on to university.

01:38:37.454 --> 01:38:40.657
[SPEAKER_00]: I was accepted at UCLA, USC Pepper Dining Bad Fan.

01:38:41.353 --> 01:38:46.095
[SPEAKER_00]: But I was so into cars that I went to a new program and at national technical, it's no longer there.

01:38:46.135 --> 01:38:47.215
[SPEAKER_00]: It was across the East from USC.

01:38:47.296 --> 01:38:49.576
[SPEAKER_00]: At the time it was the oldest technical school in Los Angeles.

01:38:50.797 --> 01:38:54.318
[SPEAKER_00]: And they had a new program where you come out with a degree.

01:38:54.679 --> 01:38:57.520
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was one of the first classes to do that and came out with a degree.

01:38:57.540 --> 01:39:00.181
[SPEAKER_00]: I went to Mercedes-Benz apprenticeship.

01:39:00.921 --> 01:39:04.823
[SPEAKER_00]: We were excited, we knew the small little welters, the small little dealership.

01:39:05.605 --> 01:39:23.920
[SPEAKER_00]: Man just only like nine guys, you know like and I could swore ice a clown my my mentor Man, you're not to the residency, you know, we were we had that relationship after while he's like the reality We never but I learned a lot for him, you know, how to do a valve job like you know No, most people don't kids now go they don't do valve.

01:39:23.940 --> 01:39:27.423
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't know how to replace guys, you know, except for the headbuilders how to cut

01:39:27.793 --> 01:39:53.645
[SPEAKER_00]: three angles and all that with the old quick way you know that yeah quick way stones and all that I learned how to draw that I don't know all that so so I did very while with Mercedes so in my 30s I went back to school now go you know what I got to put myself I went back to school and got a business degree at night looking full-time raising my family you wouldn't change anything but you would just maybe you wouldn't have done a few things okay yeah a few things but as far

01:39:55.883 --> 01:40:01.069
[SPEAKER_00]: That's how I am, and because you know what I always say, I'm street smart, but I'm also book smart.

01:40:01.129 --> 01:40:05.834
[SPEAKER_00]: And some people say that's a kind of a, you know, like a crazy tombal, you know?

01:40:06.214 --> 01:40:13.382
[SPEAKER_00]: It's good because when I would be in court of law, I can articulate and talk, you know, like if someone that's.

01:40:13.873 --> 01:40:14.893
[SPEAKER_00]: never grew up in the neighborhood.

01:40:15.234 --> 01:40:19.675
[SPEAKER_00]: But then when I go back to the neighborhood and on my friends, I still know man, I just fall into play.

01:40:19.935 --> 01:40:21.056
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not cold switching.

01:40:21.116 --> 01:40:21.616
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just that.

01:40:21.636 --> 01:40:26.838
[SPEAKER_01]: That's well, that makes you that makes you more powerful in the court.

01:40:26.858 --> 01:40:27.518
[SPEAKER_01]: Not pantering.

01:40:27.758 --> 01:40:28.919
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just that's just why I am.

01:40:28.959 --> 01:40:35.001
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you can speak a different language that a lot of people across the life aren't used to.

01:40:35.601 --> 01:40:37.522
[SPEAKER_01]: So it really is kind of a

01:40:38.482 --> 01:40:51.499
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a blessing and a curse and you know, bump back to that, you know, they're going to lie if I change my life, I have a higher calling out, me, my whole family, everybody, so you know, I could talk about my past.

01:40:51.539 --> 01:40:55.664
[SPEAKER_00]: It was crazy, you know, my proud of it, and not really

01:40:56.579 --> 01:41:07.843
[SPEAKER_00]: But it is who made me today, it's grateful for the experiences and not, you know, I've had firearms, put them like, I've done putting my face, I've been shot at what shocked on all that.

01:41:07.903 --> 01:41:14.605
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just growing up over there, it's crazy, you know, you know, over there, it's just, it's yeah.

01:41:14.705 --> 01:41:21.728
[SPEAKER_00]: And even in the 90s, even hotter, man, you know, 90s, it was crazy hot over there, but, you know, I was already raising a family back then.

01:41:21.748 --> 01:41:24.649
[SPEAKER_01]: So, so here's another question for you then.

01:41:27.169 --> 01:41:32.631
[SPEAKER_01]: After all these decades, even if you're after your time away, you know, this is Volkswagen podcast.

01:41:32.651 --> 01:41:35.953
[SPEAKER_01]: So we got to ask Volkswagen question, why?

01:41:37.133 --> 01:41:39.574
[SPEAKER_00]: What is it about Volkswagen that keeps pulling you back?

01:41:40.995 --> 01:41:44.216
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, the German car, even back then, I always do that.

01:41:44.396 --> 01:41:48.438
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I read, I was an avid reader at a very young age, you know.

01:41:48.518 --> 01:41:52.379
[SPEAKER_00]: So I read the book, I read the book, think small.

01:41:52.399 --> 01:41:53.440
[SPEAKER_00]: That was a door of Brittenbox.

01:41:54.290 --> 01:41:57.233
[SPEAKER_00]: I had an iconic case study for advertising.

01:41:57.253 --> 01:41:58.454
[SPEAKER_00]: I have friends that are advertising.

01:41:58.494 --> 01:42:02.457
[SPEAKER_00]: That was a case study when they were an advertising, when that's the university.

01:42:03.498 --> 01:42:05.960
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, okay, I'm not entitled.

01:42:05.980 --> 01:42:08.442
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a book about the history of Volkswagen.

01:42:08.682 --> 01:42:15.588
[SPEAKER_00]: I still haven't had it, but anyway, that's probably during the bout, the connection to World War II Germany,

01:42:16.047 --> 01:42:38.074
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right, I'm touched on that and crafty Troy KDF vehicle just swim wagging cubo wagging because I'm a big history book too always love history any if I I'm I'm I'm I'm a lifelong learn you know and I love to read so and then I just something about and I started I love the beat all the way it Look, so I started building models.

01:42:38.094 --> 01:42:40.415
[SPEAKER_00]: This is when I was like nine ten you haven't read in these books

01:42:41.790 --> 01:42:51.982
[SPEAKER_00]: I started building models because I just thought it was cool, you know, that's like the first time I said, okay, well, the, the chassis is not like a frame because I knew about frames in the lower end of world, right, right, right.

01:42:52.002 --> 01:42:56.868
[SPEAKER_00]: I put the frame, put the springs, you know, that my cousins, and you know, so when I saw like.

01:42:57.992 --> 01:43:19.037
[SPEAKER_00]: The little model of Volkswagen Beetle, I'm thinking, well, I don't have a frame, doesn't think it's like that's front, and you know, then I learned about torsion bars, you know, and so I always love German cars and how a safety are, the innovators, engineering, whatever your Germans do, engineering, right?

01:43:19.977 --> 01:43:20.297
[SPEAKER_00]: So,

01:43:21.701 --> 01:43:35.863
[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't going to engineering school like if I would have stayed the course and went to UCLA or whatever, you know, I would have probably been on engineering because mechanical engineering or something, you know, because I was already working on car building engines.

01:43:36.443 --> 01:43:46.285
[SPEAKER_00]: in high school, working at the part stores, you know, a unique performance in North Long Beach, Jerry's VW having a big time advertiser in HotVWs and the 80s.

01:43:47.945 --> 01:43:51.446
[SPEAKER_00]: He was also a poster guy, cool guy, I don't know off of him, well, of course, this too.

01:43:52.226 --> 01:44:00.267
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I mean, and then when I started, I worked for a year and a half, and 80s,

01:44:04.620 --> 01:44:08.190
[SPEAKER_00]: But you got to think about it if you're if you know courses they weren't selling that many units

01:44:09.080 --> 01:44:16.101
[SPEAKER_00]: And typically, the typical Porsche owner at that time was kind of did their own maintenance or enthusiasts.

01:44:16.621 --> 01:44:22.062
[SPEAKER_00]: So my buddy, that was one of the guys I went to school with the first automotive program, Doree.

01:44:22.522 --> 01:44:25.123
[SPEAKER_00]: He went to Mercedes-Benz, he goes, dude, do you got a kind of Mercedes-Benz?

01:44:25.143 --> 01:44:27.243
[SPEAKER_00]: These guys just have money, they don't work on their own cars.

01:44:27.843 --> 01:44:29.644
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's all cars.

01:44:30.044 --> 01:44:35.365
[SPEAKER_00]: So I jumped ship, went to Mercedes, and the rest of history, you got to learn and so innovate.

01:44:37.422 --> 01:44:49.633
[SPEAKER_00]: Those cars were like eight, nine, ten years ahead of any other car as far as safety, because that was constant going to school, you know, all the time, going to, and that's from the schools in Oxford by Hollywood Beach.

01:44:50.134 --> 01:44:52.116
[SPEAKER_00]: We loved it because it was like a vacation for me, my family.

01:44:52.136 --> 01:44:52.256
[SPEAKER_00]: But,

01:44:53.216 --> 01:44:55.278
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why the German they're fitting you with the German cars.

01:44:55.658 --> 01:44:56.579
[SPEAKER_00]: I love BMW.

01:44:56.699 --> 01:44:59.461
[SPEAKER_00]: But Porsche basically Porsche Volkswagen.

01:44:59.901 --> 01:45:01.162
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they're kind of the same.

01:45:01.282 --> 01:45:03.183
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, don't let a Porsche guy hear you man.

01:45:03.203 --> 01:45:03.963
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll get insulted.

01:45:04.984 --> 01:45:10.087
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't we say man, that's just a, you know, like they say, Volkswagen, that's the overpriced Porsche.

01:45:10.108 --> 01:45:12.129
[SPEAKER_00]: And the Porsche guy says, man, they don't even say that.

01:45:14.130 --> 01:45:15.351
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, but yeah.

01:45:16.151 --> 01:45:17.291
[SPEAKER_00]: So I've been on to this day.

01:45:17.311 --> 01:45:18.032
[SPEAKER_00]: I love German cars.

01:45:18.092 --> 01:45:25.455
[SPEAKER_00]: I still have my A&G F-55 with the only made it for three years, which was a V8 with a blower, a Justin supercharger blower.

01:45:26.395 --> 01:45:29.697
[SPEAKER_00]: When A&G was still hand-built, I love that car.

01:45:29.717 --> 01:45:30.177
[SPEAKER_00]: I still have it.

01:45:30.197 --> 01:45:35.539
[SPEAKER_00]: My son drove it around, but he's, I can't feel it to eight miles to the gallon.

01:45:36.460 --> 01:45:39.361
[SPEAKER_00]: So that he bought, he got him a new jet of Volkswagen.

01:45:39.901 --> 01:45:40.181
[SPEAKER_00]: You know,

01:45:42.353 --> 01:46:06.049
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, and fact this is all topic, but I had another engine that was fully tuned up to almost six hundred horse park BMW big lot of body Police all big unfortunately blew up with sitting in my garage, so the original number the original engine that was born with the stocks I put it back in that's what I have it now Like that with the stock E55 engine which is like 496 horses I think from the factory 2003 to 2014 2005

01:46:09.080 --> 01:46:13.325
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so you know, I remember, yeah, that's why that's why I don't share my course.

01:46:14.126 --> 01:46:21.594
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, mid 2000s, I want to say maybe nine or 10, you'll probably know and be able to tell me the M five.

01:46:22.175 --> 01:46:28.722
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, was like the top end was like, I remember reading an article and car and driver back then.

01:46:29.458 --> 01:46:33.124
[SPEAKER_01]: about the top end of that of that particular car.

01:46:33.164 --> 01:46:35.828
[SPEAKER_01]: The M5 was like 207 or something.

01:46:35.868 --> 01:46:36.830
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like that year.

01:46:36.850 --> 01:46:38.793
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like the fastest production car.

01:46:39.273 --> 01:46:39.614
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:46:39.874 --> 01:46:40.415
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

01:46:40.656 --> 01:46:44.201
[SPEAKER_01]: It was crumb like damn 200 miles an hour like damn.

01:46:45.142 --> 01:46:53.288
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, like when German cars come to the U.S. they have to, they have to court the, you know, software to just 1.45, they can't go over 1.45.

01:46:53.309 --> 01:47:00.074
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they've got to, they've got to, but you know, nowadays everybody hacks, even back then I had mine hacks, so I had my E55 up to like 172.

01:47:02.302 --> 01:47:06.728
[SPEAKER_00]: Dude, yeah, yeah, so yeah, that's crazy.

01:47:06.848 --> 01:47:09.771
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's I'm a big German car guy.

01:47:10.012 --> 01:47:14.457
[SPEAKER_00]: All my family drags German cars, you know, my dad's been on my way back.

01:47:14.477 --> 01:47:15.659
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my dad's 80 years old.

01:47:18.612 --> 01:47:26.280
[SPEAKER_01]: my whole life as I've grown up next to obviously same neighborhood, you know, same, same areas, my dad, St. Petersburg, Florida.

01:47:27.000 --> 01:47:35.308
[SPEAKER_01]: And unless that small time I went to, to Colorado Springs, but the whole time I've been alive that I remember my dad's had him Mercedes.

01:47:36.084 --> 01:47:49.309
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, a car is saying, yeah, yeah, so when I went to the agency of that diesel station wagon, the yellow I come my teeth on the diesel the 240 and 200D, you know, that's that's that's that was considered dirty work.

01:47:49.329 --> 01:47:54.572
[SPEAKER_00]: So they would send me okay, man, take that even out, change the head gas thing, use a dock like a fricking pan.

01:47:54.692 --> 01:48:00.754
[SPEAKER_00]: It would be, you know, back then one thing goes, man, it was like my wife would say man, your hands are black, because you know, if you ever seen diesel

01:48:03.215 --> 01:48:12.841
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so yeah, so I cut my teeth in those cars in 120 tassie 240 200 be the turbo diesel up 85 It was slow slow was all.

01:48:12.941 --> 01:48:22.206
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so those are the cars my kids are done because it because they get out I didn't travel right right that they would run for Hundreds of thousands of miles.

01:48:22.246 --> 01:48:32.532
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it's more five six seven I only keep the fluids and feel this free and the valve adjusted I had a 87 Which is which was an awesome 300 D because it had

01:48:34.293 --> 01:48:52.963
[SPEAKER_00]: adjustable had dog vowels and it was like the refinement of that he's so injured all right here's here's my last question for you describe the Volkswagen community for me in just one word family no matter what wherever you go all over the world you might not talk to a single language but we do talk to the same language

01:48:53.595 --> 01:48:54.015
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?

01:48:54.035 --> 01:48:59.277
[SPEAKER_00]: Like all my boys from the UK and Europe are coming over for bills that I won't create a weekend.

01:48:59.617 --> 01:49:01.097
[SPEAKER_00]: We get to catch up.

01:49:01.117 --> 01:49:04.338
[SPEAKER_00]: Three days after that, I'm going to Mexico City for those grocery folks show.

01:49:04.879 --> 01:49:11.641
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, my Spanish is Portugal for Spanish, my wife is fluent, but we talk the same language when it comes to Volkswagen.

01:49:12.221 --> 01:49:13.441
[SPEAKER_00]: And I consider it family.

01:49:13.501 --> 01:49:15.002
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, a guy's and girls.

01:49:15.382 --> 01:49:17.783
[SPEAKER_00]: I love seeing the younger guys in certain now.

01:49:18.423 --> 01:49:24.587
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, and, you know, even today like we talked about the new styles and all that, I love it.

01:49:25.127 --> 01:49:29.030
[SPEAKER_00]: I love the younger kids making their own style and doing their own thing, man.

01:49:29.050 --> 01:49:35.934
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, some people frown on that, or whatever, sounds like a couple of people, but I'm thinking, man, he loves that car, he built it, he's proud of it.

01:49:36.935 --> 01:49:38.736
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's the best part of the community.

01:49:38.916 --> 01:49:42.639
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the best part, is that we can all have our own individual style.

01:49:42.659 --> 01:49:43.439
[SPEAKER_00]: That's where it should be.

01:49:43.639 --> 01:49:43.980
[SPEAKER_00]: It should be.

01:49:44.060 --> 01:49:45.501
[SPEAKER_00]: We're not in homogenous group, right?

01:49:47.767 --> 01:49:52.733
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when we were doing the car cars now that you see all over, our cars would get clowned, honestly, man.

01:49:52.753 --> 01:49:53.774
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, what the hell, man?

01:49:54.455 --> 01:49:55.396
[SPEAKER_00]: We're absolutely broken.

01:49:55.456 --> 01:49:56.097
[SPEAKER_00]: What's wrong with it?

01:49:56.117 --> 01:49:56.778
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't know.

01:49:56.898 --> 01:49:57.659
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember early on.

01:49:57.679 --> 01:49:58.961
[SPEAKER_00]: I had an older guy.

01:49:58.981 --> 01:50:01.344
[SPEAKER_00]: I was at the gas station putting gas in.

01:50:01.364 --> 01:50:04.828
[SPEAKER_00]: Because what happened to your car is broken in the rear of the axles?

01:50:04.908 --> 01:50:05.288
[SPEAKER_00]: They're good.

01:50:05.308 --> 01:50:05.609
[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no.

01:50:05.649 --> 01:50:07.131
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the way it's just lowered.

01:50:08.732 --> 01:50:09.433
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:09.453 --> 01:50:10.093
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:10.113 --> 01:50:10.914
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:10.934 --> 01:50:11.635
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:11.655 --> 01:50:12.475
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:14.117 --> 01:50:14.778
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:14.798 --> 01:50:16.059
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what they were called.

01:50:16.079 --> 01:50:17.120
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what they were called.

01:50:17.140 --> 01:50:18.661
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what they were called.

01:50:18.701 --> 01:50:19.402
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:19.422 --> 01:50:20.223
[UNKNOWN]: That's what they were called.

01:50:20.243 --> 01:50:21.263
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:21.283 --> 01:50:22.244
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:22.324 --> 01:50:23.025
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:23.285 --> 01:50:24.246
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:24.286 --> 01:50:25.667
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:25.687 --> 01:50:26.508
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:26.548 --> 01:50:27.289
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:27.309 --> 01:50:28.590
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they were called.

01:50:28.610 --> 01:50:29.591
